Do you think hat blocks may have been turned on a lathe initially to get the rough shape, and then made oval by hand? It would save much time & effort to rough-turn them first on the lathe (or perhaps on a turntable).
Hat sizes were originally based on head diameter. So for my 24" head circumference, the diameter is 7.643" which is considered US size 7-5/8 (the precise fractional equivalent of 7-5/8 inches being 7.625").
Using the diameter probably made sense back when hatters made or ordered hat blocks...
Thx for asking. There was the slight irritation with the tack stitches themselves which also affected another forum member ~ detailed in post #723 of the following thread:

Particularly with thin-ribboned hats, the current practice of applying a few tack stitches vs. sewing around the entire circumference, allows the ribbon to slide up the crown between tacks. For example my Stetson Premiere Stratoliner which arrived the other day, had the frontal portion of its...
I like the way you flattened the brim. As in your case, it would be difficult for me to wear a full-fledged upturned brimmed western hat in my locale, unless I was visiting my stepfather's hobby farm where the country/western look rules. Your brim looks at least 3" wide, which would provide...
Based on my experience as a collector/restorer of vintage fountain pens, I'd guess that the item of concern is an armband produced by native Americans. They used the swastika as a peace symbol. The Parker Pen Co. issued what has become a collector's item back in the 1910s, referred to as the...
I hope my American friends on this forum might find this clip interesting, there are hats galore of course:

Hi seabass, I took delivery today of my Premiere Stratoliner, mine's in black.
It too had several ribbon tacks with loops of the clear "fishing line" jutting out. One in particular was fairly noticeable. My fix was to raise the sweat band adjacent to the tacks in order to locate the inboard...
Modern Borsos have a reputation for being on the smallish side for their stated size, which I can actually vouch for as to one of mine. If you're unable to try the hat on before buying, then I'd recommend for sure that you contact the seller & inquire as to whether the particular Borso in...
What's the scoop on the Canadian-made Smithbilt hats?
I'd like to round off my Open Road collection with a brown OR-type hat & since I've got Stetsons & Akubras already I thought I'd opt for the offering of another manufacturer. Here's the link to Smithbilt's version which they call the "Cattle...
I just pulled the trigger on a Stetson Premiere Stratoliner in black. I needed a matching hat to go with their Fashion Collection version acquired previously, in silverbelly. Anyways I placed today's order via Delmonico's taking advantage of their VALENTINE coupon code for $10 off which...
There's a soft spot in my heart for Canadian-made Biltmore Rosellinis so I was compelled to become the successful bidder of my 10th specimen, follow the eBay link to see it...
I bought a roll of large clear poly bags that are big enough to completely enclose each of my hat boxes. I then fold the excess bag length underneath the box. Seems to keep the critters at bay.
Thx to those gents who chimed in, I very much appreciate the responses. I found it telling that no one recommended a non-Akubra hat. I think that I'll proceed with the Territory, for in reviewing the images on the David Morgan site it appears that the brim is cut raw thus if the 4" width...
Thx for this. You're the second poster to warn against a 4" brim. I too have the Akubra Bushman with the 3-1/4" brim but I'm wary about the extent of protection it'll offer against snow being thrown back into my face by a mean north wind. What are the concerns with the 4" brim? ~ I should...
