Looks like I found the answer to my own question from this link maintained by the Australian Army dealing with their official military slouch hat:
http://www.army.gov.au/Our-history/Traditions/The-Slouch-Hat
The left side brim was apparently turned up to facilitate rifle drill movements...
Hi hatophile, is this a Victor make (e.g. Victor Hatco) or a Victor model (e.g. Borsalino Victor)?
It's certainly a great item, I'd expect no less from any hat with Victor in its name, regards...viclip
(PS ~ it's a secret what the 1st three letters of my handle might be a contraction of)
Borsalino Cervelt
Comes in any color you want, so long as it's Ginger
This is a light hat, weighing in at 3.1 ounces including the aftermarket feather.
The brim is 2", the open crown is 5-1/4".
Everything you always wanted to know about cervelt (but were afraid to ask)...
Thx for your input. Being Canadian I had to have a Beaver brand hat after hearing they'd gone out of business. After all, the beaver is our national animal. Wasn't sure about how durable the hats were, but had to have one, best...
I took delivery of a Makin in January. It cost over 2 bills. I know what you mean about the ribbon material. It didn't help that my hat arrived with half the ribbon separated from the crown ~ Makins used adhesive instead of stitches to affix the ribbon. I wound up removing both blobs of...
I took delivery today of one of the remaining Beaver Brand fur felts (the "Downturn" model), in Kangaroo no less. Can anyone comment on how Beavers fare in rainy weather ~ are they on par with Akubras, say?
Biltmore Rosellini London Grey
Yesterday I posted my Navy version with the narrowish "linked" self ribbon (c. 7/8").
Today I wore my London Grey version, it too is centre creased with mild bashes up front. It's sized 7-3/4 with the familiar2-1/4" snappable brim & about 5" crown...
Thx for your kind words, splintercellsz.
These Biltmore Rosellinis really are awesome hats when seen "in the flesh". Regrettably my low end camera failed to accurately reproduce the actual deep blue coloration, & it seems to have somewhat squished the image in the horizontal plane. If I can...
Biltmore Rosellini in Navy with 2-1/4" brim & 5" crown, "linked" self band:
Somewhat belatedly I've been picking these hats up as I come across them on-line. They're the last of the Canadian-made high enders that were formerly manufactured by Biltmore in Guelph, Ontario. There were...
Speaking of David Morgan, the Akubra Squatter is on close-out for $130.00 ~
http://www.davidmorgan.com/product_info.php?products_id=82
It's a tall open crown hat that can be creased/bashed to your heart's content, with a grosgrain ribbon.
I acquired one a few weeks ago in the Moonstone...
Ditto the Kangaroo 7-5/8 for me, if gtdean48 doesn't take it.
I've already got too many black hats, being the only other 7-5/8 shown.
Pity there aren't any 7-3/4's for me to pick up & pad to fit my intermediate sized noggin.
I too am interested in 7-5/8 but wide ribbon (dress hat).
Having said that, I wouldn't mind picking up a nice Open Road for casual wear.
I can make 7-3/4 work as well with a bit of padding.
