Here is what has me scratching my head...an Excelled G-1 could have been bought on sale for the paltry sum of $207, with free shipping. So why did I spend $525 on another manufacturer's G-1?
BTW...you can still get that Excelled G-1 for $217. Brand new.
I'm happy too. Yes, a very inexpensive "custom" jacket. Lucky for me that I found Don at Minsky's. There may still be a custom jacket in my future. Don't mention anything to my wife!;)
As you know, I'm a big fan of Cockpit U.S.A. We have purchased no less than 5 of their jackets. Jacky Clyman has always been responsive in the past with answering my email questions. But no response when I inquired about the sizing on the Reissue A-2. I did get a response from a representative...
Yes, I do remember. Lost a little sleep over this one, thinking that maybe a custom jacket should have been ordered. But in the end, it was a pleasant surprise for us!
Thanks for the compliments.
A side benefit, the sleeves are about 3/4 inch shorter now. They actually fit better than before. More like a size 42R should fit.
Funny, you wonder why Cockpit does not make them like this in the first place? These are supposedly Issue A-2's.
To be honest, I was nervous. Real nervous! What a pleasant surprise when I slipped the jacket on, and it fit! Just like I wanted! Yes, call me a Happy Camper.
Yes. I can highly recommend him. And Fanch (a contributor here) has had very good luck with Don. He told me that this is a common alteration. Don alters full leather racing suits, plus real (real!) WWII A-2's, G-1's, etc. Most often he does the knits, cuffs, liners, plus sleeve shortening, etc...
OK...all of you doubters gather round! Just got my Cockpit Reissue A-2 back from Don at Minsky's Tailor Shop. He worked a miracle on my jacket. Where the original shoulder measured 21", Don did exactly what I wanted and took it in to 19".
Remember, this is a size 42R. It now fits perfectly. But...
I agree with the "scenic" ride. My Mustang is stressed for +9 / -6 G's. I am a 1 G guy! An aileron roll is about as much as I want...and only if it is a 1 G maneuver!
A local museum here, the Cavanaugh Flight Museum, offers rides in their aircraft. These include an F4U Corsair, P-51D Mustang, AT-6, and others. Other than coming up with the cash, it is pretty easy to get a 30 minute or an hour flight in these. Stallion 51 in Florida offers P-51 training...
It is easy to buy a ride over here in a B-17, B-24, P-51, AT-6, etc. Not cheap, however. The Collings Foundation tours the country every year, offering rides to those interested.
A 30 minute flight in a B-17 is $450.
30 minutes in a P-51 is $2,200.
A friend bought a ride in the B-24. He said it...
I get this question all the time. It is simple. A 100% full size P-51 will cost 2.5 million U.S. dollars. The hourly operating cost is 1,400 U.S. dollars.
Many think that you could build one for less money. Titan Aircraft is developing a full size kit. The base price is 500,000 U.S. dollars. It...
My first A-2 was a Schott. Bought it around 1980. Great jacket. Extremely well made. And, very heavy. Wish I still had it. Gave it to my brother in law years ago.
But the A-2 was different from my more traditional ones. It reminded me of a "biker jacket". Nothing wrong with that!
Good for you. U.S. Authentic makes great jackets. I just bought their G-1. Shaul is very responsive to your questions.
Hope yours turns out the way you like.
Can't PM you, for some reason. Ben Chester-Master does the air shows, including the Normandy D-Day re-enactment. Look up Ben (U.K.) at Moccas Mustang.

Be sure to tell him that his Texas friend told you about him!
These exact G-1's can be ordered from www.leathercoatsetc.com
Wait until they have a sale, and they often do. The last one was an extra 30% off their already low prices. That would have you a G-1 for the sum of $207, with free shipping.
Excelled Sheepskin Co.
edit: Breaking News! They are now...
Ha! Yes, scaled down the original pin-up gal's chest. Plus, we used the "Stars & Bars" rather than the Texas flag. Most here voted for this. But on a FB page, almost everyone went for the Texas Flag.
We most likely will paint the flag on the Mustang. Looks like we might be in the paint shop mid...
