I wonder if the spec had an "effective" date? Obviously, the government couldn't expect a vendor to dump the 1000 goat hides that it had and purchase a bunch of steer hides.

I don't know what the contract cycle is on these items, but it could also be that Cooper was the last vendor who won the bid under the old spec and was just grandfathered in. Thus they were bound by whatever spec their contract stated way back when their particular procurement cycle began.

Interesting that cow was required at some point, but that it had to "look" like goat...doesn't that sound like a government operation! LOL!

One of the other pilots in my squadron has a Cooper that is made of Goat. He was issued that in 1998.

I went flying with mine yesterday. Here are few pics of my issued Excelled. I wear a 46R, but I was issued a 48 because they said I would be wearing my winter gear under it, so I needed the room. It is slightly too big, but it does fit when I wear my winter gear under it. I tried on a 46R at G&B and it fit like my issued 48. The one aspect of the jacket I do not like is the synthetic collar. After a few years of wear it looks like the hide of a dead animal, as seen by the pictures.

A little "age" from wearing it while flying with my survival vest on.

Actually, the Excelleds really look good on you guys.

But here's two pics in the last two years or so of my Pharr and my Cooper,

To my eye, the Cooper looks so much better on me than the Pharr. Some of it is cut, but some is just the droopiness of the leather.

I look like I'm in my third Trimester in that Pharr!

Measurements of my 40 so at least gives you an idea. I am normally a 38 in everything but both new and vintage G1s I have a 40 otherwise a 38 is just to small. 40 is spot on

The more I see of the Excelled, the more I like it. I'm glad the boys have a jacket that they can be proud to wear again.

It's interesting. My Cooper is newish of course, but it says that the collar is Acrylic. But it's a much denser Acrylic than what my Pharr had. I wonder if the really fine Dynel matts more than a coarser one. I never thought my issue collar looked quite that matted and I had my original Cooper for about 14 years before I traded it in.

Leather Coats Etc. G-1.jpg
These exact G-1's can be ordered from www.leathercoatsetc.com
Wait until they have a sale, and they often do. The last one was an extra 30% off their already low prices. That would have you a G-1 for the sum of $207, with free shipping.
Excelled Sheepskin Co.

edit: Breaking News! They are now having their Spring Sale, with an extra 25% off of everything.

Interesting that they only go up to 46...that might put me out of the running. I find it hard to imagine that they don't make a 48. I've seen some bruisers as aircrewman in my day and at least two pilots whose callsign was, "Tiny".

They really need to ditch the D-bag with the beard. These jackets look about 300% more authentic on Peter (and TTF naturally) than they do on spinach chin there.

I think the Cockpit has got it right in getting a guy who looks like a pilot and putting him in a flight suit in front of a plane. And US Wings should post some of those Coastie pics rather than old Mr Van Dyke there in his scarf.

Are you saying i should apply for a job as a G1 model there? ha ha! Only if i get free jackets!!!

Yeah, I should have remembered that...I was looking at that auction just the other day.

I actually got my Cooper from this guy IIRC. His prices are pretty high though, for eBay. Truly, I'm about to sell my Pharr and my old G+B.

I really don't need another jacket. But for 200 clams, I could be talked into it! ;)

And yes, you should apply to be a model there. At least you look like you could keep your lunch money.

Deacon: I have three Excelled G-1s that are 48s. Like you, I can wear either a 46 or a 48....sort of in between. But I am glad that you have taken another look at the Excelled jackets....they really are well made and very comfortable. Hope you get to add one to your collection soon.
Cheers,
Mike

Sorry, guys...but I picked this one up yesterday. Makes three Excelled G-1s that I have in my collection. Very comfortable day wearer jackets. Keep looking, though. I got one as low as $100.00 and it looks like it was bearly worn. All the best...Mike

I have one of the early contracts with the eagle label on before they started to do the Dscp label on in mint condition in 38. Sadly it's just too small. If anyone is interested I can put it on classified sections for sale. They do run small so it was my first one and I sadly realised I need a size up in these.

$100 is a good price. It seems that the guy who ran your auction has quite the corner on the market in G-1s.

I think it was him who I got my Cooper from a few years ago. $400 is just a bit too much for me right now, not so much in the affordability category as in the justifiability one (he says as he stares into his closet of G-1s) ;)

Here is what has me scratching my head...an Excelled G-1 could have been bought on sale for the paltry sum of $207, with free shipping. So why did I spend $525 on another manufacturer's G-1?

BTW...you can still get that Excelled G-1 for $217. Brand new.
