Yes, he had me put the jacket on, and zip it up all the way. So he knows what it looks like. He then took chalk and drew a line around the armpit from the top of the shoulder. It would be about an inch removed. But as I think about it, that would remove two inches from the pit to pit...
Just got to thinking...can two inches be removed from the shoulder without affecting the chest or pit-to-pit fitting? The Cockpit Reissue A-2 is a good fit everywhere, except the shoulder. If the chest were smaller, I would not be able to use the jacket.
Any thoughts? Yes, I will ask the tailor...
You can see that other than the shoulders, the fit is pretty good. The shoulders do droop a bit, so will have two inches removed. That will also have the effect of shortening the sleeve by one inch.
I just dropped off my A-2 with Don at Minsky Tailor Shop in Dallas. He has been doing leather custom alterations for over 3 decades. Don came highly recommended...hope he does good!
Here is a before photo:
Alan (JL Leathers) said it was entirely doable. The only thing he mentioned was the sleeve would ride about 3/4" higher. This will actually improve the overall fit. The rest of the jacket is spot on for what I'm looking for.
Should have said..."A fit that will look good on my 5' 11", 170lb...
El Marro - Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm glad that it was positive. Alan at JL Leather was one of the people contacted. But I am lucky enough to have found a very good leather tailor in the North Texas area.
Just hope my results are as good as yours!
No worries. I did speak with G&B, but not about their sizing as related to current government contracts. The conversation was in regards to a custom made G-1, when I was advised they no longer do any custom work.
With regards to American Mystique, I asked about the size thru the waist and upper...
This is the company that I contacted. Their claim was that the size is dictated by the D.O.D. contract, and it could not be changed.
American Mystique, a seller on Ebay. Their jacket looks very similar in fit to my Wings G-1, being a bit long in the body and sleeve, with extra room in the upper...
My new Cockpit Reissue A-2 is a great jacket, near perfect in every way except one...shoulder width. After some research, I have found a couple well respected tailors (leather) who claim that removing 1.5" to 2.0" from the shoulder is not a big deal. They also said it would cause the sleeve to...
OK...I am pretty sure someone here has had experience with Minsky. I just spoke with the tailor, and he said no big deal to take 1 1/2" out of my shoulder on my new A-2. The cost is about $65. Seems reasonable to me, plus I can drive the jacket to the shop.
Any of you have feedback on Minsky? I...
I just sent them a question via email. Wondering if they can remove 1.5" from the shoulder of my new Cockpit A-2. If they can, and it won't break the bank, I'll have them do it.
Here is another item for cleanup...just got off the phone with U.S. Wings. They do indeed have a D.O.D. contract to supply G-1's to the U.S.C.G.
Now we can put that to bed!
With regards to sizing (G&B), as well as others, I contacted a sales company and explained their jacket was simply too large through the waist in their size 42. The sales person explained to me that the G-1's they sell are in fact made to D.O.D. specifications, and the size is what it is. Like...
I still subscribe to the "innocent until proven guilty" theory. A phone call will be made today to U.S. Wings. And yes, the Wings Signature jackets (made by Schott) are First Class in quality of materials, and quality of construction. I would put their jackets up against those costing twice as much.
This from the US Wings website:
Genuine US Military-issue G-1! Our US Wings Signature Series™ USCG G-1 flight jacket is the same one we supply to the US Coast Guard! The G-1 is the USN and USCG leather bomber flight jacket, worn with pride by naval aviators since WWII. Our G-1 is hand-made from...
