I do like the look of single breasted suits with peak lapels. Here is Cary Grant in a single breasted peaked lapel suit, with Katharine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart in The Philadelphia Story.
I would add Borsalino, Christy's of London, Worth and Worth, Biltmore and P. & C. Habig. I don't know much about the quality of Habig althought the hats seem quite nice. My first fedora and one tyrolian, my great uncle's (?), were made by Habig and actually fit.
I have to second that recommendation for Holland & Sherry. Some of my favourite suits and jackets were made from their fabrics. My old tailor used to call me when they came for their annual visits so I could buy at reduced rates, or given my size, buy the ends of bolts that had 3 1/2" yards or...
We tend to avoid nights out on the holidays unless it's a nice dinner party at a friend's home. Big nights out are generally spontaneous or at least less planned - i.e. a friend was unable to use his tickets to the Boston Symphony so we found ourselves at the performance followed by dinner at a...
I still see a fair number of coats downtown, or when I go home to New York, but it does seem that big baggy down (?) coats and Gore-Tex are winning out. I certainly hope that they haven't reached point of obsolescence.
Uh Oh. Looks like I have some competition for those size 7's out there... My small noggin has allowed me to pick up a few nice hats with no other bidders.
If you enjoyed Preminger's movie you should definitely check out Cabin in the Sky. It's based on Faust, has some great music, and the clothing and hats are terrific. Lena Horne plays Georgia Brown. I'm listening to her and Belafonte right now - Bess, You is My Woman - as I type this reply...
This is something I would very much like to see as well. Most of my hats are Borsalinos and few from Worth and Worth. I grew up in NYC and did my shopping at JJ Hat center without really exploring much else. In recent years I have been trying to learn more about other makers and shopping for...
Sapere aude indeed. A fine motto for some of us in this forum.
In order to keep things more or less on topic - here are some hat's from the period when Kant wrote What is Enlightenment?. The first two are from plates about five years prior, and the third is typical of the years just after...
My apologies if this has already been answered, but does anyone know where this look orginated? Is it a fairly modern look, or is this somehing we can find in historical styles?
The wheels are turning as I shamelessy bask in your flattery. Are you referring to John Bridge's Gentlemanners series of books? Although I have noticed them on a friend's bookshef, I have yet to read them. I still refer to a very old copy of Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct...
Agreed. Quite different. One on the vintage Borsalino's I noticed on e-bay was a mink fur hat, but was not in my size. That one looked a lot more like the first black Borso in your photos. I don't have this new hat in my hands but I do want to see what happens after a good brushing.
That fuzzy finish was one of the things I liked about the hat. Different enough to make it interesting. Does anyone know what that finish is called? Worth and Worth sell a hat the describe as "cashmere finish" and JJ Hat center have a few with a longer/fuzzy finish, but those have a bit more...
Did you see Porgy and Bess sung on the stage? Or, the Otto Preminger movie from 1959? I saw the New York City Opera performance of the Houston Opera revival, as well as some wonderful highlights from Porgy & Bess at a New Years eve Gershwin performace at Carnegie Hall. One of my favourite...
IMHO - the first suit may appeal to a wider audience. I prefer the second for it cut and details, but the first is much closer in style to the "normal" suits of today. Three button pinstripe is a staple in our offices, and to find a well made suite in a decent fabric would make it quite...
