I have to agree with RBH. A new tweed suit will be my next major purchase - I am looking forward to my next trip to Scotland. Harris tweed suit, one pair of plus fours and one pair of trousers with an extra moleskin waistcoat for variety!
I just tried a Google search and the first listing was a seller with hat boxes from a shop called Baskin. According to their description "Baskin was a fine mens and women's clothing store on State Street in Chicago. Early 1900's through the 60's".
Yes. The sweatbank also shows "Baskin" possibly a store name? And, in the front of the sweat "Diamante", which appears to be the syle? Lots of tags and other info in the hat, but I have yet to find a source to help identify the various numbers or markings found in Borsos.
Thanks. It has taken me many trips to various hat shops and many purchases to really figure out what I like and the hats that suit my features and build. I used to think high crowns didn't work, but the brim size is far more important for me.
For suits, jackets, trousers and hats I realize...
I'm not doing a very good job with the detail photos, but here are a few shots of the Borso that arrived today. It is a Grand Prix and has a few markings and a size tag I've not seen before. It has the name "Diamante" in quotations on the front of the sweatban the last quote is subscript not...
One interesting item in an otherwise ho hum publication is the hat timeline in Esquire's Big Black Book 2006. It is not accompanied by text but the captin is "The Long Slow Decline of The American Hat." It starts with in 1772 with George Washington and ends in 2006 with (I had to look up the...
My favourite growing up, and today, is Marine Air Terminal in NYC. Not what it used to be but still an easy place to take the shuttle, or one of the charter services. A long time dream is to resotre it to it's glory days and bring back the Yankee Clipper.
Those are in line with most dealers I've tried for a decent copy. I got very exited visiting a shop in Virginia once that said they had a copy in very good condition. There were clearly not using accepted ratings for when describing the book. When we got to the store a local high school...
Excellent hats. I love vintage ads / posters. The cigar, liquor and travel ads are great as well. I'll have to track down a few of the old Borso ads that I've seen.
Funny you should mention that. After seeing a "Roaring Twenties" men's racoon coat on ebay, and walking the dogs with the temperature in the teens, I was thinking the same thing.
Mr. Deckard - Admirable goals all for the magazine. For my new, and decidedly not vintage, apartment I am very slowly working towards Art Deco decor and would love to see articles about this for the home. And, while I enjoy our vintage / period evenings and shooting parties with the vintagers...
I would agree that there are no hard and fast rules to style. Cut, fabric, and the individual dictate what works.
To my taste, Grant's jacket would look better with the bottom button open. As long as the lapels don't continue down below the third button, as so many do today, two or three...
I was trying to politely ignore this... ;) Wish I could have found a still of Edward Arnold in his single breasted three piece with peaked lapels in You Can't Take It with You.
