What's costumic about it? I don't get it. Again, this is what separates the FL from the other forums. We're about STYLE here, not about playing by the rules, not about what's acceptable in the boardroom. Maybe it takes larger than life characters to pull it off, but that's what I like about the Lounge - most of us are larger than life.

Regards,

Senator Jack

Exactly right!

Those who don't get it...don't get it because they could not pull it off...not because its not stylish.

Having seen our esteemed Senator of Style in precisely this sort of look....I can say its definatly hot. But on someone who didn't beleive in himself and his style, maybe it would look different.

Perhaps those with less chutzpah, shouldn't make statments about things being costume-like just because they could not wear them without them being a costume. Its clear others -can- wear them.

Viva la difference...

My apologies if this has already been answered, but does anyone know where this look orginated? Is it a fairly modern look, or is this somehing we can find in historical styles?

Indeed! And some people wear their clothes with style and intent, and others clothes wear them! Jack is decidedly of the former on the style front.

Yes, nothing like waltzing into a group of aficionados and sniping at them from the edges. If you don't enjoy or understand the aesthetic, then why engage in the banter? We are not at a deficit of constantly negative voices.

The black musicians may have been a bit flashier, but you also see it a lot in Hollywood photos from the 20s and 30s. white guys that is. Not just the stars, but all the camera guys etc.

I've been wearing black shirts that way since my teens, (which was a long time ago;) ) one of my favorite looks is a black shirt with a light tan Hollywood jacket.

Guys, the costume comment was actually started with comment #3.
I'd never worn a light coat with a black shirt before but I liked the way it looked and I'm going to try that look again.

I wasn't doing any such thing, guys. I merely said it was a look that didn't look good to me. I think you're confusing differing opinion for "sniping at the edges." In my opinion, it's not stylish. In your opinion, it is. I'm fine with that. I've never said my opinion is correct, nor have I said yours is.

I'm sorry, but it seems any time someone doesn't like a certain vintage style, you guys lay it on them for "attacking" it, which I have not done at all. There are many older styles that I like, and many I don't. If one cannot express their opinion here if it's not the same... then I must have missed a certain rule.

While I think we all want to keep the tone here from getting too partisan or negative, I think we all know that Jovan is a good guy and just has a strong sense of aesthetics, and is bound to make some comments on certain things. I also like to play the devil's advocate sometimes.

Other times I even say things that might get construed as offensive, so I edit them to clarify that I am not trying to offend anyone.

We all know he doesn't take himself or his opinions too seriously. In fact, his "hmph" comment cracked me up.

It reminds me of myself when I am feeling what my ex girlfriend/friend calls being curmudgeonly. Which means being contrary, but in a charming way I guess.

I think we would all know that if someone came on here with nasty negative opinions, it would be different indeed.

Sometimes we have an opinion that seems to be so contrary to everyone else's we feel like we have to fight for it for some reason.

Jovan, please don't feel like I am defending you. I am sure you don't need it. It is more about my own tendencies.

I do like a spirited debate and I can't keep from being the contrarian, devil's advocate or curmudgeon sometiimes.

S'cool.

Personally I think something like a royal blue would look good with a cream or white coat/suit. As much as I hate to admit it, Piece Brosnan pulled it off pretty well in a recent Bond movie.

Not at all. It has nothing to do with the style. Style can be debated all day long. It is a matter of tone.

It may have benefitted you to lurk for a while, get a feel for the place, and the people here before posting.

I like the look, but you need to have the right physique (I don't anymore) to pull it off. I used to have a nice cream linen jacket with a medium brown shirt with a mixed medium brown and white tie over dark brown pants that my my wife said looked good. But keep in mind she said that before we got married and that was 18+ years ago when i was a much younger and slimmer bear.

I very much like the medium to dark blue shirt under a white/cream coloured jacket.

I am also a fan of the dark suit & shirt with a tie with a lot of white in it. My oldest son pulls it off very well...

This seems a variation on the classic blue shirt under a white or cream summer or linen suit. It was pretty common back in the day. Not so much dark, but darker than the suit. Probably a rewsult of the fact that a white shirt won't quite match the suit, but close enough to clash.

Looks good, but that weird necklace thing has got to go. New wave influence I guess.

lol I never thought about that. All I usually think looking at that picture is "painful torture device." And a missed opportunity for a video game that I was really looking forward to. There was going to be a TWINE video game where one of the minigames involved you talking down what's-her-name so she doesn't kill you before help arrives. But I'm going :eek:fftopic:.

It seems to me that there is always a better choice than a black shirt, although I might cut a little slack to a casual black linen shirt. Obviously some here like the look, but I am not among them.

Disclaimer: I'm sure I could accurately be accused of being overly concerned with 'rules', however I also tend to think such rules usually exist for some good reason.

If a black shirt under a white coat is not part of our "rule book" then I am at the wrong place. :eusa_doh:
Go back to the beginning of the thread and look at the pictures. Those are the kind of pictures that should inspire, not strike revulsion in guys on this forum!
One can admit to never having worn the jacket/shirt combination but the photos scream "Style".

Dark shirts.

There is nothing more elegant than a navy blue or black shirt under a sportcoat or suit. They show off neckties beautifully and scream 30's. Pete.:D

Of course everyone here has their own tastes and style of dress. But my all time favorite look is that of a black hipster musician. If they wear it, i love it. Not to say I would like just anything. But there is a certain aesthetic i just dig. If I think I can pull it off, I will wear it. If not, I just dig it from afar.

Now, i realise that i'm opening a whole other can of worms with this post. But here's my addition to the group of black shirt under white suit jacket pics.

Yes, those are flowers on the shirt. The greatest thing - in my mind - we as men gained from the 1960s was a re-embraceing of the floral motif in menswear.
