Keep in mind some of those dark shirts could have been blues, maroons, charcoal greys, forest greens.

I like to wear a white linen suit with a navy blue shirt and yellow tie, which looks vividly 30s but without the gangsta overtone.
Right. The assumption of black & whiite photography is in thinking everything is black, white, or a shade of gray. :)

Resortes, you're too hep for your own good, and that's a mighty fine thing!

Love the look, looks sharp when it's done right, a la Senator Jack, another smooth-as-they-come hepster. My black shirt, terracotta hollywood jacket and light tan trousers combo always gets lots of compliments. It's all in the contrast.

I love the look. I wear it with my gaberdine belted back double breasted cream 30s suit. I figure it is a hollywood looking suit so what the heck. the look was very popular in hollywood in the 20s and 30s and of course with musicians.

Truth is, I think a white shirt looks funny with the suit because the suit is cream, and the white clashes, so what else to wear. Well, maybe dark blue. That is a good look with a summer suit in linen or palm beach, but this suit is crisper than that.

I will post some pics sometime.

Yes a dark shirt of any color looks good under a lighter color jacket- beige, tan, off white, searsucker with light color blend fabrics. And as Reetpleat illustrates it works with darker jacket colors as well.:) Hmm? I think I'll wear my dark brown shirt under my tan suit Saturday instead of a lighter one when I go out.

Hence the cheeky reference to castor oil:

Castor oil as a tool of political terror

In Fascist Italy under the regime of Benito Mussolini, castor oil was one of the tools of the blackshirts. Political dissidents were force-fed large quantities of castor oil by Fascist paramilitary groups. This technique was said to have been originated by Gabriele D'Annunzio. Victims of this treatment would experience severe diarrhea and dehydration, often resulting in death[6].

Sometimes when the blackshirts wished to make sure that the victim would die rather than simply be badly disabled, they would mix gasoline with the castor oil.

It is said that Mussolini's power was backed by "the bludgeon and castor oil."

I walked into an Italian deli once to get a sandwich and looked up at the menu. 'What's in a Godfather,' I asked. 'Salami, provolone, and olive oil,' said the counterman. 'And what about a Madonna?' 'Salami, provolone and virgin olive oil,' was his reply. 'And the Mussolini?' 'Salami, provolone, and castor oil.'

If you made any sort of joke like that in Germany now, people wouldn't talk to you I think.

Uniform, actually. Band uniform. Mostly limited to Black bands in the 1930s.

Somewhere I have a pic of Willie Lewis' band (a swinging group of Black Americans based in Paris circa mid '30s) attired in the white DBs with black shirt/white tie à la Eddie Cole. I'll try to scan and post it.

Yeah, I kinda noticed I didnt see no white folks in the original pics posted. And they do all seem to be in bands.

Maybe its viewed as a look that seems to work better with a darker skin tone. [huh]

They all look mighty fine tho.

The black musicians may have been a bit flashier, but you also see it a lot in hollywood photos from the 20s and 30s. white hguys that is. Not just the stars, but all the camera guys etc.

What's costumic about it? I don't get it. Again, this is what separates the FL from the other forums. We're about STYLE here, not about playing by the rules, not about what's acceptable in the boardroom. Maybe it takes larger than life characters to pull it off, but that's what I like about the Lounge - most of us are larger than life.

Regards,

Senator Jack
