I've always wanted to see that.

I've seen Porgy and Bess & Carmen Jones. Both are spectacular. Cabin in the Sky looks to be in a similar such style.

Did you see Porgy and Bess sung on the stage? Or, the Otto Preminger movie from 1959? I saw the New York City Opera performance of the Houston Opera revival, as well as some wonderful highlights from Porgy & Bess at a New Years eve Gershwin performace at Carnegie Hall. One of my favourite recordings of Porgy and Bess is sung by Lena Horne and Harry Belafonte.

I really like Gershwin, in another thread we were speaking about fusions of two types of music - I enjoy both Opera and Jazz and Gershwin's Porgy and Bess really combines the two brilliantly.

Cabin In The Sky has to be one of my favorite musicals ever! Excellent direction by Vicente Minnelli and who can forget the formidable Ethel Waters and her lovely song 'Taking a Chance on Love' ? I could listen to that over and over and over... I like it so much !

I saw the movie. Went to an Otto Preminger tribute where they showed a bunch of clips of his movies. They showed the scene where Sammy Davis Jr sings It Ain't Necessarily So. I had to see the movie after that!

If you enjoyed Preminger's movie you should definitely check out Cabin in the Sky. It's based on Faust, has some great music, and the clothing and hats are terrific. Lena Horne plays Georgia Brown. I'm listening to her and Belafonte right now - Bess, You is My Woman - as I type this reply. What a performer, woman and family. Her grandmother was a suffragette activist.
