I have to agree with you. Shoulder fit is really important if it doesn't fit there it just does not look right. Also agree with unsnaping the collar snaps. Lastly the fit under the armpits is very important. Too tight and I don't care how the jacket looks it is just uncomfortable.
Most of the early contracts (prior to the war) were russet . I have two original A2s that were redyed seal (a Roughwear and a Doniger). My Monarch, a wartime issue jacket, was a dark russet color not seal but not as light as the pre-war models. It is hard to say why hollywood seems to go for...

I have also heard but not confirmed that the reason the Army went to horsehide is that in the early 1930s there was a phased out of horse calvery and the Army had an excess of horses and so.... that is why they went with horsehide for the A2. A good story don't know if it is true but being in...
I think you cannot tell the difference between cow and horse. I have both and side by side you really can't tell. I know companies, like Aero for example, would never put their rep on the line to sneak in cow in place of horse. IMO of course.
Cowhide or steer hide or any other hide thickness is dependent upon how thick the original hide is. I have seen very thin cowhide (1.5 to 2 oz) and some very thick goatskin (3.5 oz). The weight is dependent upon the thickness of the leather. Each oz is based on 0.4mm of thickness. Therefore...
Cost wise and for quality of product I really like the FlightSuits or Gibson and Barnes. Great customer service. This was my first horsehide A2. Of course it lead to ELC, Aero, RMNZ and Buzz Rickson repros. So be careful about this it can become an obsession.
Fedora,
The color on your jacket is exactly (at least in the photo you have) of my Buzz Rickson 21996. The "Bronco Hide" Buzz uses is just exactly like that mixed really grainy stuff with smooth. There is really no way to tell just by looking at leather whether it is horse or cow. The real...
I have owned and like both jackets. Each has their positive and negetive features. I dislike FS more modern fit but they do have outstanding leather and an attractive cost. Aero is more costly but has the more WW2 type fit and also has some outstanding leather. I think it comes down to what...
I can see talon zippers on two of the jackets in the top photos. Hard to tell which model they are as you can't see details like pockets or whether they have collar stands or not.

"So, if people 'these days' really think they are going to pay BIG BUCKS for the ultimate repro that looks like an original, well...it's not really going to ever happen, as the originals never had the budgets or quality control to make a PERFECT JACKET that would pass muster to the...
