Don't be afraid
You could try a little cold water, but I found the stiffer Akubra's respond better to steam, about 6 to 8 inches away. Don't worry, the Akubra can take it!

Improvise
I actually use a small, 1 inch paint brush with fairly soft bristles. I don't even bother with the brim brush unless something is being stubborn.

MG-B and GF
I'm already working on a meet with somebody, but if it falls through, I'll contact you guys. Otherwise, I'll make sure to pass your names along.

Measuring idea
I don't know if this would be any easier, but if you have a cloth tape measure, rather than inching it around the inside... why not slip it into the sweatband? Wouldn't the sweatband hold it in place? I know that the measurement wouldn't be perfect, but considering that other...
Important Links
OK, I'm working on the next hnad-off as we speak. For those who need to know, here are links to two important threads in this endeavor;
First, the thread where we only post pictures and logs of the hats travels.

Proof of the Poconos
Here's me, in the notorious hat, at the Pocono Raceway. I thought the B&W might appeal to many here. Wish the shot could have been better. If you click "return to album" you'll see several shots, including color versions.

Pictures
Naltak,
If you want, get a free yahoo account. They have a photo host page. Once the pics are on, just cut and paste the address. I'd like to see more photos, too.

I have the travelling hat! I am planning to get the picture taken soon, so I need to find somebody to pass it on to. So, anybody in PA who's interested, chime in here. Closest person to me wins!

That Dorman Pacific you picked
ufguy11,
You want honest, on a budget, yes? Here it is. Many people here will tell you to avoid wool felt hats, and normally I'd agree. But if waiting a few months isn't going to change your price limit, it's may be a good place to start. As for the Dorfman...
Miller Milan
Rick,
I just recently bought a Miller Milan, and I love it. I actually prefer it over the panama-type straws! I got the one that's below that gray one on their website, but it's pretty much the same hat. Here's some pics (not my best, but it'll give you an idea)...
Oops.
IndianaGuybrush; There's a brainfart for you! :eusa_doh: Yes, I meant grosgrain. I don't know where my head was.
By the way, great avatar hat! Looks like an Aventurebilt Indy with an extra wide brim...

It's here!
I just got the hat today. I believe there is somebody in my area who signed up. I have to dig through and find them. Anyway, what should I be writing in the journal? Did we decide on what should be in there, specifically?

Welcome to our world
I agree, our "locals" are a good place to start. Also, I've never had a problem with millerhats.com and they will answer questions by e-mail. Ebay can be a little hit or miss, but OK.
I'll probably be shot for saying this, but if you don't really have $100 or so to...
Nice hat
Great dimensions on that one. If you want it to look more "golden age" you could have the leather band replaced by a nice crossgrain ribbon and bow. At the price you paid, if the hat is in good shape, it might be worth the expense. I hope it's great hat.

The Latest
Photobyalan and I have not been able to get together, it seems. So, according to him, he's mailing the hat to me. That's what he said a few days ago. When it arrives, I will post here within 24 hours and begin the process of passing it on immediately.
If anybody has a schedule...
