A snap brim is a brim that isn't specifically styled. It is stored "up" all the way around (curved gently upward, not flat), and to wear the brim down in front or back, it can be "snapped" down by hand. Then, you snap it back up when you put it away. Most fedoras I've seen have snap brims...
I like Miller
I've never been to the store, but I've delt with Miller on line a great deal. They always help me with questions, and the actual hats I've bought or seen personally don't disappoint.
Ditto Matt's Op.
I don't know the Yukon, but in my experience Biltmore makes a darn nice hat. Better than a modern Stetson, for sure. I'd buy another Biltmore without worry.
NB
Another "Local"
I'll keep my eyes open next time I'm in Hazelton. I haven't been there in a while, which means I'm probably due.
Hey, Big Joe! Have you signed up for the travelling hat thing? Do you even know about it? We could use someone between the Poconos (me) and Ohio!
Hmm...
Maybe not, I don't know. I got them from Noggintops, and they look like the curved dustbroom type I've seen posted here. Never saw a crown brush at all.[huh]
A Non-Believer
I don't like hat brushes. They are contradictory. Every place you can buy them on-line, the description says to use a soft bristled brush. But the actual hat brushes are stiff enough to scratch my own skin without much pressure. I already scratched one hat with a light...
Understood, Sharpe
Makes sense. Would there be any problem with posting an e-mail address for him to contact me? I don't want to step on any toes or break decorum. Let me know.
Define low cost
Most decent fur felts in $100 range will have a nice smooth finish. My best luck has been with millerhats.com, whose name label hats are Biltmores. Check out the Manhattan. It's light weight and any other of their hats with the same finish should be equal to it. The Baldwin...
Welcome jay_b!
I very rarely see a hat with a white ribbon, unless the hat is white (or nearly so). Raindog is dead-on about the fur felt. It's the best you'll get for the money. If you want to check out a good site with lots of choices, try millerhats.com. Also, I sent you a Private Message.
Fairly informed reply
Hi clevispin,
As I understand the hat shaping stuff, bash is usually the term chosen when one creases and shapes the hat by hand. Normally, this is done from an open crown (round dome), but softer hats with a shape can be reshaped by hand as well. The open crown is a...
Make Believe
I don't know when it started, but I was very young. Not more than 5 years old. I'm guessing that TV and movies created an association between what people wore and who they were. Since being an elementary school student didn't pay very well :p I couldn't wear costumes in my...
Extra Benefits
You know, this travelling hat thing has a couple of bonus positive effects for certain members. Since it's an Akubra, people who have never seen one will finally see what sort of hat they make. If they always wanted to compare a Squatter to a Fedoration, now they can. Those...
How soft do you want, V?
Are you talking about crushable soft, or just not cowbay hat hard?
If Aaron doesn't have what you're looking for, Millerhats.com is a big site. They carry a few name brands, but their own brand is made by Biltmore. Nice hats, not overly expensive, but still hover...
