I'm In
I am the proud owner of two OR's, I think from the 60's, but I'm not completely sure. I love both of them, especially the blue/gray one. I don't mind the cattleman bash on the OR because the hat isn't a huge as most western hats. However, te bash just doesn't look good on me.
My...
and in TV Land...
Now I KNOW fedoras are making a comback! I've seen a few pop up on tv lately, on Law Order and such, but I got a shock this weekend when a Fedora turned up on Battlestar Galactica! Granted, it wasn't a felt dress hat, but never the less a fedora style hat, worn by sci-fi...
Very Optional
To Echo MK, fedora brims come numerous ways. I think the binding adds a touch of class to most hats, though I hated it when I was younger. Now, I think I prefer brim bindings. There are a couple kinds of hats that I think always have a brim binding (correct me if I'm wrong...
Not bad, but...
Scotrace, your list has some good points and ideas, but if I may state some concerns for further consideration...
2. A one week time limit might be a bit too limiting, but I agree that a limit would be a good idea. I mean, what if the week you get it you are swamped with...
Ah Ha!
I was kind of hoping my slanderous words would churn up the truth. No intent to insult, WEEGEE. Just a little civil unrest.:)
So, a photo of a guy taking a photo while wearing The Hat. I guess it's just appropriate.
I know we were hoping for as many hand-off pictures as...
The Vanishing Hat
As far as I know, I was like the third person on the list, and I still haven't gotten it. I think WeeGee decided to keep it! So much for gentlemanly conduct. [bad]
Actually, Besdor...
The shiping from Australia is high, but I did the math when I bought mine. It actually cost me less to buy it from Australia because the hat's price was so much lower (like $70 range)! Convert your currency and redo your math!
Perfect Flaws
I like a woman to have at least one obvious, so-called, "imperfection". A big nose, or crooked teeth, a scar, whatever. Glasses always work for me, I don't know why.
I also love deep laugh lines and curves. And to echo some ealier comments, I do rather like the jewish facial...
Akubra vs. Vintage
Peter,
I have managed to get my hands on a couple of vintage lids, two Akubra's, and a small mix of other modern hats. I won't call myself anything NEAR an expert, but I did have an opportunity to compare.
As far as modern hats go, I would recommend Akubra to anybody...
You'll be happy with the Fed
Congratulations on taking the plunge! And welcome to the addiction.
I think you'll like the Akubra. They make pretty good modern hats by any account. Wear it in good health and humor.
It looks like a Beaut!
I was thinking about bidding, but I have two already. I was hoping an OR-Deprived member here would get it! Congrats!
You will like that hat, I'm sure of it. I rather prefer the center dent for the Open Road. The one in my avatar has it, and here's a link to a...
Ooooo! Hard One!
1. Keep a Hatter and a tailor on retainer to custom-make my wardrobe. (half vintage styles, half eccentric cool stuff I just want).
2. Donate to cancer research.
3. Buy a bigger house and a second car (though not a huge house, and not a foreign car... maybe a caddy or a hot...
If it's just the look you want...
If you don't mind a modern hat, Akubra makes a hat that's almost a spot-on duplicate of the Open Road. It's called a Campdraft. Hatsdirect.com can get it if you ask them by e-mail. It will never be as good as a vintage, but Akubra makes a solid modern hat...
Aging to perfection
I don't have the deluxe, but I have the regular Fed. A bit of rebashing did help to soften it up, but when I got caught in my first major rain storm, it did a great deal to soften it up. As for the round shape, Akubras are very round from the factory. My Fed has slowly...
The Elusive Whippet
As with most vintage hats, the Whippet is found only by perseverence and luck. The Whippet seems to be a particularly difficult hat to find. I'm still searching. Ebay is, as Epic says, inefficient. But it is pretty much the best way, unless you have a good supply of...
A while back, I bought a tan Open Road from the Wingnut. He said it needed a little work, and that the ribbon was stained. He had reshaped it from a western block to this:

Nice hat, I thought. So I...
