    The Changing "Staples" of Menswear

Hmm, I wish this were true. I think the basics have radically changed, but only insofar as many of the things you listed have simply dropped off the list entirely (why the relegation of tweed suits to seasonal fabric, for instance?). And the items that remain are commercially available along a...

    The Changing "Staples" of Menswear

Thanks for the thoughtful replies, all. HBK, your list was exactly what I was hoping could be drummed up. I'm intrigued by the idea of a list of basics, and how that list has changed. I work next to Rice University, and I intend to hit Fondren Library's magazine archives, to see if I can...

    The Changing "Staples" of Menswear

Just dug through the pre-1920s thread, paying particular attention to the catalog scans NOT from Kuppenheimer and HS&M, on the theory that cheaper, more widely distributed advertisements would carry a wider variety of "basic" offerings. I won't belabor this thread with a bunch of cross posts, as...

    The Changing "Staples" of Menswear

I recently completed my set of solid woven grenadine ties in black, burgundy, and navy blue, often touted today as "staple" menswear items, along with dress shirts in pale blue and white. By staple I mean items that are utterly basic, necessary, and utilitarian, the foundations on which a...

    What are you wearing today??

I suspect Two Types' wording reflects his complicated relationship with contrast collars. ;) Thanks for the props, folks! EDIT: Great look HBK. I presume that shirt is vintage?

    Show us your suits

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the switch to Rayon linings/vest backs circa 1930. The lining is most definitely rayon, so that settles it. Early 30's it is. Thanks Nik. Thanks TT! I plucked it from ebay, actually. The thrifting possibilities in Texas aren't great, so I'm forced to stalk the...

    Show us your suits

New suit, would welcome any dating suggestions. There was a receipt in the pocket from 1937, that I am fairly sure was NOT for the suit. The length of the waistcoat, the shape of the lapels, the slanting breast pocket, the backwards facing shoulder seam, and the fancy fabric make me think late...

    What are you wearing today??

Taking my new late 20s/early 30s suit for a spin. Fabric is fancy, hard to see in this photo. More shots in the Show Us Your Suits Thread.

30's Latvian suit with link button closure

The first suit was a GORGEOUS three piece blue suit with peak lapels and a nice windowpane. It was gone within forty minutes. I know, because I noticed it on tumblr an hour later and went to buy it, only to find it was already gone. He hit the jackpot with the Boardwalk Empire sell-off!

30's Latvian suit with link button closure

Supposedly from the Boardwalk Empire wardrobe collection. Looks a bit like some of those Romanians we keep seeing in the Suits section. Hope you're tiny with average-to-short legs though. http://www.etsy.com/listing/209118825/vintage-1930s-mens-3pc-peak-lapel-suit?ref=shop_home_active_1

The Thread to Display Your 1940s Suits

Gorgeous suit Roger! Looks to my only slightly trained eye like it could be even older - late 30's maybe. Beautiful suit. That hole shouldn't be hard at all to repair - any competent alterations tailor who does reweaving should be able to knock that out for you. Great find!

    American Collegiate Trousers

Ha. Thanks for validating my intuition, Dinerman. I guess these won't be the "authentic 1920s oxford bags" that remain illusively out of reach.

    American Collegiate Trousers

These seem more like 30's trousers to me, but still very nice and wide, with a double button waist closure. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-20s-HOUNDSTOOTH-Work-Wear-PANTS-Sport-Mens-Denim-SANFORIZED-Side-Buckles-/311136371041?pt=Vintage_Men_s_Clothing&hash=item48712c4161

    Tab Collar Shirts Still Available?

I have several suitsupply suits and ties. I like their stuff, though I haven't tried their shirts. You can do some convincing early 20s-ish stuff with their line. Their suits are cut slim, but the rises aren't super low.

    Luxire trousers

I've been lucky on my luxire orders - they once forgot to include a second collar in a shirt I ordered, but that's as far as their mistakes have gone. I wouldn't dare order a jacket or trousers from them though. Too much investment to shrug off when/if some horrible mistake happens. And some of...

    The Vintage Tailoring Thread

There is the "Gentlemen Show Us What You've Made" thread in the General section, that would probably be the proper place for a scarf.

    What are you wearing today??

You've merged a match-y impulse (suit + hat) with a contrast-y impulse (shirt + tie) quite well here, Dinerman. I'll always thumb a club collar, too. PS You and HBK always shine at photo composition.

Yes, you'll probably be fine. An adjustment a day at most.
