Off the top of my head...
You might look up when hat makers had to stop using
mercury (~1930). You might look up when the Borsalino name
was sold (~1980). Familiarize yourself with brands that,
on...
I vote with the faction that says it's character in an
old hat. You can't pay to get a hat like that. Meanwhile,
you have an awesome Borsalino with a unique finish and
what appears to be a Cavanagh (felted) edge.
It doesn't pay to be too OCD with vintage stuff.
I think Gore-Tex, polyester fleece, and nylon jackets are one
of the worst scourges of modern life. Yech. Plastic. I do own
a nylon Mountain Hardware windbreaker (which a friend gave
me from the "free" pile at Mountain Hardware) and a Gore-Tex
REI rain jacket. They are useful when...
You do pull off the homburg look.
While it's true that the X rating system is often mere
marketing flim flam, it means more the older your hat
might be. We haven't seen detail pictures of anything
but the lining logo, but based on the graphic, the typeface
used, and the plastic, I'd...
I know others (hi JP) have these on the site, so I'll let them
weigh in on whether it's just a "gimmick on a Whippet". I suspect
not, and caution against judging all wide brim binding Stetsons to
be Whippets.
But more importantly, Lefty, if you aren't going to bid on

Enjoy! I bet it is nice.
There are extreme cases that make the argument clearer.
There is an infamous hatter who...
Gotta pipe up to agree with Hawk Eye.
When you read a restaurant review, it's not
just about the food. Unless you've bought a
hat from Art Fawcett or a jacket from John Chapman
or had a similar experience, you might not appreciate
how much a good attitude (or talent of observation
or...
I'm ashamed that I forgot to bid on this steal.
Hope someone here got it so we can see what it
turns out to be. Looks like a 40s Stetson 3X with
a kettle curl brim, in black. Never seen that before!
Nice big 3/8, too...
That Optimo is easy on the eyes. Thanks for showing it around.
Nice photo and all... but seeing that hat just makes me want to
run out and get vanilla ice cream. A favorite bow style, too. Really nice.
The homburg, on the other hand... that brim binding should
be returned. It's not...
How do you plan to use it?
Is this for a one-time costume or
something you plan to wear regularly?
If the latter, you should get a good quality hat.
Yes, a new one is expensive. Get an idea of
