Carter and I were discussing an ad I placed in the classifieds and this advertisement came up.

It got me thinking about all the colors I've seen, and off the top of my head I can only think of six or seven different colored Whippets here in the lounge.

I can't imagine that Stetson actually made 24 different colors of Whippets but I thought it would be fun for everyone to post their Whippets to see how many are out there.

I'll start.

Perhaps they indeed offered that many colors, but you gotta wonder how many of those colors the retailers actually bought, considering that so many of those retailers were small, family-owned-and-operated concerns with small customer bases. Couldn't very well tie up operating capital (and stockroom space) on merchandise that didn't move.

Anyone got any Stetson salesman's materials from around that time? If there are indeed 24 colors offered for the Whippet model, the question that comes to mind is, how many units in the more unusual colors were actually made?

That's gotta be James Mason pulling a cameo...nooo???
At first I thought it was Elisha Cook Jr. But I think you must be right.
Besides, anyone wearing Elisha Cook Jr.'s hat had better worry.

This is exactly my line of reasoning. You can offer as many colors are you like but how many men are going to wear these hats?
I will guess male consumers in the past were not so different from today and made conservative purchases.

Slightly off topic

That second to last line has me intrigued. What kind of hat would have cost $100 in 1954?

I in turn will guess you could get any color you liked of the 24 on special order.

Thanks Rumblefish! What color is that one on the left? It almost looks like Peach! Beautiful!

Ain't it, though? Very cool.

Any idea what Stetson called that color, rumblefish? Any clues hiding under the sweatband?

Rumblefish's hat reminds me of the peach Portis owned by Baron Kurtz.
Peach?.. I guess it's close to peach, on the yellow side.
No clues under the sweat band, just a little paper and glue marks.
