Look, here's the thing with Akubras, they're tough as nails. They'll hold up to just about anything you can throw at it. In serious rain, I won't reach for any other hat. But overall felt quality is "good" not "great" in terms of the finish and feel. An Adventurebilt, if you can get one, is...
What Aaron said. Ebay is random beast sometimes. If you're thinking of plonking down enough money on a full rebuilding of the hat, I think you're going to end up with the short end of the stick if you want to sell for a profit. Cleaning and blocking is probably worthwhile if all the other...
There's certainly a market out there...somewhere. For example, Optimo runs two brick and mortar stores selling at $650 (or did they hit $700?). Perhaps the Premiere Strats was hatco dipping their foot in the water, so to speak. If the production run maintains the quality Josh has seen, I...
I re-shaped my misfit Royal (not) 'Deluxe' Stratoliner and gave it a cattleman's crease (for now). I tried to give it a Rooster Cogburn crease, but there's not enough crown [huh]
My reasoning is that: if these are at the quality of 40's and 50's Stetsons, of which I have one or two, I'm going to like that more than a standard Winchester dress weight. YMMV. Plus, I don't mind supporting this venture back into quality open crown hats.
Do we have any idea what, if any, other styles might be released using the excellent quality felt? I do love me a thin ribbon, but I'd hold out for, oh, I don't know, a Playboy (wink wink, nudge nudge), or something.
Brim looks too short to be an Adventurer and that doesn't look like the block used. There is a surprising amount of variation from seemingly similar looking blocks. That one looks fairly straight sided in the picture, reminiscent of the well regarded 52 block. In particular, the top of the...
Well now I don't know what color I want! Is Cordova darker than Mink? I already have two black Stratoliners. I could probably justify caribou; don't have a green hat but don't know if I would wear it.
If only they had Silverbelly, it'd be a no brainer.
Having handled as many hats as you have Josh, your words carry weight (at least with me!). Glad Stetson has continued to improve. I'll keep an eye out for these.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that no custom hatter is making their own felt. The fur fibers have to be removed from the pelt and felted. The primary source for felt is Winchester, who supplies virtually every company not named Stetson/Hatco (they produce their own felt). The other...
Btw Berkeley Hat co is my hometown store. They don't do a lot of high end stuff, but they do brisk enough business to survive as a brick and mortar store of Telegraph ave. Bought my first wool stingy there, and a Stetson straw. Can't speak to their online business, but its a reputable store.
I've got a lovely Cavanagh homburg I put some dents in. I've also got a 50's St. Regis that needs some Black Sheep Hatworks TLC that I got as a gift for a friend...so there's two in the hands of the younger generation.
Village Hat Shop has the Stetsonian on sale for $198:

Haven't subjected my replacement Strat to any incliment weather, but the finish of the felt is quite nice. Thinness is definitely more on par with vintage felts. I still wish the tacking stitches were neater, and to be really picky, mine is tacked just a teensy bit high of the brim break...
