I shipped an A-2 back to Aero from the East coast last Nov. It cost me about $60 with tracking via USPS.
I think they raised their shipping rates at the start of this year, and an A-2 isn't quite that heavy of a package. Probably the cheapest way to ship is USPS.
Just my 2 cents.
Call G&B on the phone and they will discuss your custom desires. If you want side pockets just order their Civil G-1. They do carry tall and short sizes.
The Cockpit vintage G-1 looks just like a WW2 original jacket; washed goatskin with a genuine mouton collar and NO break-in required.
Hello,
Sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad's M-422a! Very commendable of you to replicate it.
Try Gibson&Barnes; they make a quality replica M-422a and will also do the navy aviator name tag for you.
If you want a jacket that looks more vintage (not brand new) check out athe Cockpit's...
I wonder if JFK's G-1 is now the most expensive leather jacket ever?
I remember a thread posted on FL about an original Douglas MacArthur A-2 that had a starting bid of 100k or so. Not sure what that one eventually sold for (or even if it sold).
I know storm cuffs were a standard specification on US Navy M-444/445 sheepskin flight jackets dating back to about 1940. Not sure when they first appeared in civilian style jackets.
I like the first pic with a one-piece back. A nice, neat and clean workman style jacket. The pleated version reminds me of those bike jackets with the special zip-open vent panels (for air flow/ventilation).
I've noticed the same thing Sloan. The vintage mouton feels like soft mink (or petting a cat's fur) while the new repro G-1 collars seems more like the feel of thick shag carpet. One area where repro G-1 jackets just don't seem accurate, IMHO.
I agree. I have an older ELC M-422a in 44 long. Great jacket, however when I ordered it I ordered a 44 long (1" added) and didn't know they also have an extra-long (1.5 inches added to regular length). I'm cursed with those blasted gorilla-arms and could have used that extra length!
Probably...
Nice jacket! Congrats. Up here in the US Northeast we got socked with a blizzard....perfect weather to test out the new hide (and get her nice and wet!).
Wear it in good health!
Must be an omen...."time" to order another jacket! Or if you wait until 8:44, you can order 2 of them!
Let's see, I'd order a BK W&G M-422 repro AND a new ELC M-422a.
I agree Aerojoe. If one doesn't get too hung up on the details and just liked the overall look and fit of the jacket, the Cockpit vintage G-1 is a winner. The price for a new one is creeping up too so they must know that it's a quality jacket and not as generic and boring as their mass-produced...
Right you are, Aerojoe! I have one in size 48 (they seem to run a bit small?) and it fits me great, with nice long sleeves, a very nice vintage-y looking washed goatskin. I like mine ALOT!
Yes, long arms is the scourge of vintage jacket fit. That's one reason I usually opt for a full custom repro. And I like the break in of new leather!
I own a Cockpit vintage washed goatskin G-1 (great jacket) and an older size 44 long ELC model m-422a with the G&F label. Sadly it's a tad small...
I am leaning toward a BK. I've asked Andy for a leather sample of the seal goatskin. He also e-mailed me measurements for two different size jackets.
Thank you for the input!
