I just came back from US Navy duty in Yokosuka, Japan and found a Buzz Rickson retail store right outside the base; huge inventory of BR clothes and jackets! I scored a BR N-1 Navy deck jacket in the impossible-to-find size XXL! Beautiful jacket (it's my new go-to winter coat). So glad I grabbed...
And it may seem obvious, but if the pocket is in the lining the leather facings around the border of the pocket may eventually show an imprint onto the front of the jacket. There was a thread on this "phenomenon" somewhere on TFL where people chimed in on whether this was "normal" or detracted...
I have the BK W&G M-422 and its superb! The fit, the materials, the workmanship, all perfect! Have worn it everyday since receiving it in August and its a great all-around jacket. Just got back from a trip to Japan and the M-422 served me well, from hauling luggage and a backpack through...
Beautiful jacket, great fit! My BK M-422 fits me like a glove. I wonder how thick/heavy the leather on that Westfall jacket is in relation to the hide used in the BK A-2?
You can't layer under the A-2 too much so I'd say its good to about 40 degrees or so with a good sweater underneath. It also depends on your threshold to cold temps as well.
"BK jackets are the best because they are carefully hand crafted only in the springtime on the thighs of fair Brazilian maidens that we keep locked in the basement."
Andy you could make a fortune charging people to take private tours of the factory! LOL!
Nice pick up, pilot error! Largest size I ever came across was a 42 in rough shape in a vintage clothing store (tried it on but it was a bit small for me). Would love to find one in decent condition in a size 44.
Good luck with it.
Nice jacket; today a seal goatskin, tomorrow a russet horsehide, then the obligatory G-1...it's becomes a fun (but somewhat expensive) hobby!
Good luck with the new ELC.
"Most European tanners I've quizzed on the subject have been surprised to learn that anyone anywhere would actually want veg-tanned horsehide, adding that there has never been even the slightest demand for it over here (Europe)."
Another quote taken out of context but would certainly be news to...
I agree with Johannes, the sleeves could be an inch longer (that's just my personal preference).
Jacket looks good; what are your impressions of the quality of the jacket? Seams? Zipper? Matched leather panels (color and grain)?
I read somewhere that since there were much fewer Navy aviators then Army Air Force pilots, the Navy could be more selective in their flight jacket specifications (in quantity and quality) since they didn't need the mass quantities of flight gear that the USAAF did. Also the Navy specified the...
@Flashy: the G&B m-422a jacket is based on a WWII contract design made by Gordon & Ferguson; it has a lighter (milk chocolate brown) color than the (dark chocolate) G-1, a red lining and it's left front pocket is slightly wider then the right side pocket (to accommodate a pencil slot; this was...
