If its in solid, very wearable condition I could go up to $600 or so. Would have to check the measurements though (I have long arms). Thank you very much Dr H!
Thanks guys for all your input thus far. Of course I'd love an original M-422 but they don't come up in my size (44-46) too often. Same for early model G-1's.
I do like the idea of a brand new, stiffer goatskin hide that takes some breaking in (that's the fun part, IMHO) so am leaning toward a...
The BK 422 is one of the jackets I'm considering. Did you get their G&F or the Willis&Geiger model?
Andrew gave a very thorough and positive review of his BK M-422a jacket.
The BK W&G 422 is definitely on my radar!
Hey fellas,
Need your input on who you feel makes the best repro WWII USN M-422(a) flight jackets. I own an older ELC Gordon & Ferguson M-422a repro (very nice). Looking for a new jacket and just curious on your opinions (pros and cons). Thanks!
As others have suggested, just sell the Highwayman here in the classifieds or on the 'Bay. You'll probably get more for it then as a trade-in. What size & color is your Highwayman ?
Besides, talking and reading about it on this very interesting thread gives us something to do while we're waiting 12-14 months for the jacket to arrive.
A charity it certainly isn't. If GW is acclaimed as THE best A-2, John could easily boost prices to the Real McCoy levels (2K +) to reflect the status that GW has achieved in the repro market. Somewhat akin to the exotic car market (Bugatti, Maybach, etc) where THE best cars are custom made via...
Maybe he should just raise prices to an even $3,000 (in line with the insane price of some Japanese jacket makers) to REALLY perfect his business model?
Add to the fact that we can only wear one jacket at a time the fact that its only jacket weather for about 8 months out if the year and that we usually just wear a jacket to and from our place of work or to where ever we are going (ie not indoors) and the long break-in period for FQHH, it makes...
Was thinking about a GW M-422....until I saw the new price of $1899.00!
WAY out of my price range. I'll just buy an original in good condition for half that price. The search/wait time will probably be shorter
Good point. Many of the one-off sample jackets at the Avirex outlet store had brass "paper clip" style zips. Some had cheap faux antiqued "Talon" zips. Over 30 years the new jackets could probably pass as NOS vintage jackets.
That label is very similar to the ones sewn into older Avirex test/sample cloth jackets from the 1980's. Avirex had a store in Queens, NY in the 80's that sold one-of-a-kind sample jackets, test patterns, defective "seconds" etc. there were cloth and leather jackets in every size, shape, color...
