Hi Max,
The sweatband is surely applied with a reed. The front is fabricated using Maclachlan's AirVac ventilation construction... same as in the Silver Beaver 50.
A wise observation. With members coming and going over the years, our group is a mixture of members of different tenure and with that, a range of purpose, experience, hat knowledge and tastes. I remember having a cup of coffee with RLK once where he admitted to posting and bumping just to move...
I haven't worn this jacket much during the last 50 years... always a challenge to find a good hat to wear with. Thanks to Keith Lo Bue, I've got some choices.
Really great pick up Garrett with interesting details. Gold size tag, fixed wind cord button, stitched rear sweat seam, combined with the 1915 medal imprint. Some elements are useful in dating a hat, others not so much. Does the lacing appear to have been added after production by a hat shop...
Overstrikes like this appear from time to time... this one perhaps the result of a legal action by Knox (HCA) who registered the trademark for "moveo et proficio" in connection with hats before the turn of the 20th century. The milan body was probably imported - perhaps sold by a small jobber...
Thank you guys. These Borsalino thin ribbons gave up very little to their American cousins of the same era. I have a couple and they are among my favorite hats to wear.
A Gotham date-o-matic watch that belonged to my Dad. I remember being captivated by the moonphase display as a kid. A modest stainless watch with a swiss movement. My main wearer is out for service so I've been enjoying some watches that I've rarely worn. Might look for a nicer strap for this one.
Two thumbs up on that appreciation, Steve. I've learned so much from you and others here.
My collection of hats began quite a few years back when I misplaced a hat that I wore pretty much every day. It was a modern hat and I replaced it easily... but it dawned on me that perhaps I should buy a...
Right?... we were kids.
Seems the Europeans have the trophy on light. The Borsalino Pocket Hat is remarkably light thanks to its grosgrain sweatband... though it does retain a full liner with paper crown protector. 65 grams:
Just slightly heavier is this white Vimenet at 67 grams...
Bump @Garrett... looks like the Stetson feather weight is just a wee bit heavier than the Dobbs Hankachif. I have that one to my uncle some years back.
Congratulations to your daughter and the family on her accomplishment. Wonderful to see San Marco with dry stones in the foreground. I hope Venice has weathered the flooding, now a forgotten disaster in a year of disasters. And last but not least, a remarkable hat of many colors. Outstanding!
Thanks Perry, I remember that it has inspired you in the past. ;^)
Many thanks for the kind words.
It's a good early felt season wear at 2.8 ounces (79 grams).
cheers,
Alan
Hi Ross and all... after a few hundred posts on this research thread I am encouraged that the evidence continues to show a relationship between the LOTXXXX stamp numbers and a chronological history of production. We still don't know the meaning of the numbers- ie, is it hat production lots, or...
