Your shop looks great!
Watch the opening scene of the 1949 movie "Twelve O'Clock High" for an example of what the hat buying experience ought to be. :)
I think, from my limited experience, that felt and leather do "give" a little over time, especially given the warmth and moisture of the scalp. Or, you can get a hat that fits front to back and then stuff the sides a bit.
Then again, you have the perfect excuse to get an Art Fawcett custom. ;)
Thanks, folks! I was surprised there weren't more bidders on this one, too.
Yes, the sweat is right around 2 inches. I normally wear a 7-3/8 but this one fits me fine. I've noticed that my Resistols and my Dobbs hats tend to run a little larger than my Stetsons.
My landlord's Aussie...
Every time I think I have more than enough hats, one comes along that's different from all the rest. This is it, a Resistol in a wonderful sage green color in that nice kitten finish. It has a 3-3/8" brim with a Cav-like edge.
I've only ever seen three green vintage fedoras on the 'Bay, I...
In Gold Diggers of 1933, you can almost hear a swear word as the actresses are grabbing their costumes before an act. It may not have been audible in the original version, perhaps it came out when the soundtrack was restored.
I love that movie, it's definitely pre-Code.
A sage green Stratoliner? Does it have a picture of the Holy Grail in the liner? lol
I would dearly love to find something like that. No disrespect to the excellent Stratoliner I have now, of course.
Yep, that's what I figured, too. Just from the way they look, I'd guessed that they're stiff as heck. My Adam topper is a 7-3/8 and stiff as plywood, and it fits me fine, though. I've also noticed that vintage Dobbs felts tend to run large, at least the ones I've gotten so far. Did Dobbs...
I really don't have one. When I head out to work or shop, or out to the back yard for a smoke, I'll try to grab a different one each time. I love 'em all and also I want to save wear and sweat damage on my vintage lids.
I may wear a half-dozen different hats over the course of a day. :)
Cool hat, Douglas, both literally and figuratively!
That's part of the fun or the 'Bay, bidding on those auctions with few pictures and a sketchy description, winning something for a comparatively low bid, and keeping your fingers crossed before it arrives.
You open the box and it's...
The other thing that strikes me about this hat is how light it is. It seems to weigh half as much as some of my other vintage fedoras. And darn the luck, it doesn't have a wind trolley. I'd actually use it if it had one. lol
Don't hold your breath. lol
Let's see, I don't have a boater yet, I don't have a newsboy and I don't have one of those Rex Harrison tweed fedoras. I may yet get a boater although I think it may be the one style that doesn't look good on me.
Oh, and you forgot top hats and bowlers. lol
Thanks, folks! Oh, I'm definitely going to wear this hat, just not in as heavy a rotation as my others. I try to make sure all my vintage lids get a turn.
