Howdy Jake,
Been expectin' this...Got my flak jacket ans steel helmet on, I'm ready.
Again, I actually like CHINATOWN, but not as much as almost everybody else. The acting is generally very good, the sets and costumes tremendous. However, I just don't see how people get so carried away with...
My unpopular opinion.
CHINATOWN seems to be one of the most highly regarded films among my friends and associates. Overall I enjoyed the movie very much, I have it on dvd and watch it every year or so. What bothers me very much about the movie tho is the extreme precision of the writing. I find...
FT my man,
Congrats. I have a few of those Aero sweatshirts myself. Dynamite stuff them. Be advised, they are not pre-shrunk.
History Preservation Archives in Jersey now offers Buzz Rickson's sweatshirts, very nice. Alas, not cheap, but an even finer quality than Aero's.
Perhaps those who are offended by re-enacting would find the whole shebang more palatable if they were less concerned about the mentality or motivations of the individual re-enactors, and accept the events more as a live performance piece or extreme historical play (which is essentially what it is).
Scotrace,
Excellent aquisition. I have a pair of the Polos as well and love 'em to death. Very comfortable. Great for the Fourth of July.
Incindentally I wore mine to Yankee Stadium on the 4th of July 2003 with a seersucker suit and boater. Many quizzical looks but non-disapproving. Misfortune...
Currently I have two russet A-2s, and ELC Roughwear 1401 and an Aero Real Deal. As much as I love my Eastman, the leather is a bit too smooth. The Aero's raunchy grain is much closer to that that of an original's.
FT my man,
Past experience has taught me that if this is a jacket just for wearing, do NOT purchase an actual 30's jacket unless it you deem the price incredibly cheap. Buy a reproduction. No thread rot/seam splits, near-impossible to replace vintage zippers, flaking/peeling, etc. Just keep...
I seem to recall reading somewhere that the modern zipper was a German invention, a product of the Zipp company (anyone who has an old Luftwaffe jacket will recognize this name) The word "zipper" was trademarked by Zipp and thus the word as a catch-all for metal-toothed slide fasteners was...
I have an issue of Life from 1938 which has an ad for Talon slide fasteners. The selling point in this particular ad is that the zipper eliminates the gaps between fly buttons, thus creating a smoother line and avoiding cool drafts.
H.D. Lee starting using zippers as an option on their jeans in...
Wow. Thanks for posting those cool photos. The A-1 was a dynamite jacket. That example looks more like horsehide than capeskin to my untrained eyes.
The photos of the women in the A-2s made me think of my father's cousin. She was a ferry pilot for the AAF, delivering single-engine aircraft to...
