Happy holidays, all.
I visited the Schott flagship store in SoHo on my most-recent trip to New York City over the summer to try on a few jackets I’d had my eye on. I’d been looking at adding a classic black spread collar to alternate with my brown Schott 543 Waxy Buffalo Sunset Jacket—a jacket I absolutely adore.
At the top of the list was the P693 Horween Deer-Touch Cowhide Rider, but I didn’t like the color (it’s sort of an ashy black-gray) and the cuffs didn’t feel right.
Next up was the 463 U.S. Bison Delivery Jacket. It looks nice in the marketing pictures, but the fit was weird and I didn’t care for the front pockets.
Finally, I tried 552 Natural Pebbled Cowhide Jacket—this was the winner. It’s essentially like the 530 Cafe Racer I used to own with a spread collar and non-zippered sleeve cuffs. The fit was great, the style is classic, and it was the best-priced model of the three. I made a plan to order one later in November during their Black Friday sale to save 15%.
Trying on the 552 at the Schott NYC store
After patiently waiting, it was time to order it. Unfortunately, the one I received didn’t fit nearly as well in the sleeve length, so I retuned it. I then ordered two new models to try—the Wildcat 576 and the Antique Cowhide Rancher 596.
The 596 vs. the 576
Though the 576 is a lighter jacket and has a nice design, the sleeves were similar to the 552 and far too short. I also didn’t love the fit and finish. This one was an easy pass.
The 596, though, is a stunner. It has a classic silhouette with some nice details to give it a great look and fit. The removable curly sheepskin collar is a nice feature that changes the look and makes it more versatile when it’s especially cold outside. The grain of the leather is great and the leather smells divine. This one was the winner.
The winner is…the 596
For reference, I’m 6’4” and weigh 212 lb. The jacket is an XL and fits very well. It’s not too snug nor is it boxy, so I can easily wear layers underneath it while it still maintains a clean silhouette. The shirt I’m wearing in the pictures below is a Large Tall, so it extends a bit below the jacket.

I’ve worn the jacket a few times already and simply love it. I’m really pleased with it and look forward to breaking it in this season.
