I believe that "action back" refers to gussets in the sleeve area and/or the center back that allows unimpeded movement, a gusset being gathered extra material where the flexability is desired.

Here's my modern A-2, one with armpit extra pieces and side pieces as well, which if I'm not mistaken is referred to as the "Turkey Mod". I don't think it's a bad fit around the arms..

I've considered the same possibility, they are simply a very stylish, military look. An M-43 cap is easier to spot as an Axis component. I know from experience...so I stopped wearing them even sans insignia.
