I'm reducing my inventory... :D
I have 2 pairs of late '50's worsted wool khaki summer trousers ($20 ea) and 2 worsted wool khaki shirts ($15 ea), 3 heavy 8 oz khaki shirts ($15 ea), and two light weight 4 oz (for wearing under the uniform blouse) kahaki shirts ($15 ea). The shirts and pants...
The Aviator jacket has to be one of the best designs I have seen yet.. Definately going on my list of jackets to figure out how to make...

Have you tried soaking everything below the collar, wrapping it around a big medicine ball and pummeling it with a cricket bat every day for a week or two? Good way to get rid of city stress, anyway... :)
BTW what size is it?

James- While you have it apart that would be an excellent jacket to start learning how to copy a pattern. I think it's very impportant to have the actual item sitting next to you when you make a copy- that's how I learned, even simple looking jackets like this one have all sorts of tricks and...
To really make jackets you will have to buy a true industrial- look for somethinglike a Singer 211G or a Consew 206, but make sure it has a compound feed (needle, presser foot, and feed dogs all feed the material). Trying to do it with a home machine (even a nice Pfaff) is just impossible. You...
Thanks all- The cut is not too different from a very very small A-2 (16" shoulders) but it tapers more in the bust. My daughter is on the tall and slim side so I didn't have to make any adjustments.
Anybody out there with some actual sewing skills who can help explain how to fit a womens...
It's my daughter's 15th B-day yesterday, so as a combo birthday/Christmas gift I am making her a jacket. We picked one that she liked from a thrift store, then I copied it and added a few details of my own (like the dark goatskin hide,a liner, M-422A waistknits, my collar, etc.) It's not totally...
Well done James- I thought that thing looked too nice to be stock...
Definately need details though, What material for the liner? Type of dye? Knits?:)
Great jacket, I'm making something very similar for my daughter right now. Can't wait to see the pics after you get it-

Thanks for the compliments-
If you do a search on the FL for my posts you can track the entire process over the last two years... This started as an attempt to replace the cuffs and zipper on a jacket and grew from there. I use an industrial machine and tex 90 thread or thicker, the four...
Hey- that's me...
that was one of John's early cowhide test jackets, made out of a fairly thick cowhide- but the collar is pretty accurate.

Then:
Now- in my own jacket... I think I've gained a few pounds in the last couple years :)
The collar is not really out of proportion- most of them are around 3" tall. It's more a case of the '70's ruining the '40's than anything else. Note this collars on this crew:
Best place to see this is John's website- you can compare the collars on several different contracts.
Cheers...
Thanks- it's great fun creating these things. I mentioned on the other post, but I agree that the collar is a little big- it's period correct, but I might tone it doen a little on the next one.
Cheers
