If it looks that bad, you MUST talk to the vendor, hatter, whatever. Do it civilly, but be clear on your concerns. DIY is all well and good, but when you pay for services, they should be done and done right. I've had problems from time to time, but I give every vendor a chance to make things...
My guess would be that most fedora manufacturers (as opposed to hatters) don't really have a good feel for how important it is to match up a crown shape with a hat wearer, and the subtleties of it all. However, that's probably a function of a majority of the customer base not knowing either...
In terms of my own personal experience with vintage lids;
I have found tall, straighter crowns more common to the 1920's, 30's, and 40's, with brims being widest in the 30's and 40's. I usually find shorter, more tapered crowns as I search into the 50's and 60's with brims of 2 1/2" or less...
Many newsboys are that way, but Hat People Caps do not have stiff brims. They have enough body to hold their shape, but are easily rolled. No cardboard or plastic core.:D
I have several caps from Hat People. They are pretty soft caps to start with and will break in rather nicely. If they get stubborn about a shape I don't like (from shipping or storage) I just wet my hand a little and then massage the wool a bit.
My first experience with Jimmy went well, but after that it got ugly. My last dealing involved a reblock that turned into a six-month game of hide & seek. That ended with a rather fierce message from me demanding my hat back immediately, reblocked or not. My hat showed up without a word...
My deepest apologies, gents. I haven't been able to get on-site recently. Anyway, I found something to do the job. Thank you all (present and otherwise) for the offers.
MODS - You can lock this one up, if you'd like.
This "Luigi Baroni" cap is practically new, clean and light weight. Perfect for summer, matches everything! Fabric sweatband, stitched-down front.
Size tag reads XL, and it fits my 7 1/2 noggin pretty well. $35 shipping CONUS.
I am on the lookout for a black fedora, U.S. size 7 1/4 (or a roomy 7 1/8). Brim needs to be about 2 1/2 inches or so, and minimal to no crown taper, mid-to-wide black ribbon.
I prefer something under $70, but the perfect lid could push me over. Basically, I want the hat to look good as...
I am a very proud and happy owner of a Penman LC. It took a long time for me to plunge into the LC style (with Indy hats I'm more of a Raiders guy), but I'm glad I waited. I ended with the right hat from the right vendor at the right time! It was my near-constant companion for most of my...
Since you live in Texas, you may want to check out the Stetson outlet. I'm not sure where it is, and I know it's a big state, but that's one suggestion. Stetson does quite a bit more than western hats, after all. That would be for a felt hat. Not the best fedoras, but not a bad place to...
If you need a hat on a budget, don't be so eager to discount a wool felt. I picked up a victorian style topper that, with a regular de-linting, looks great and gets loads of compliments.
FINALLY! I get to join all you Topper guys! I have wanted a top hat since I was a kid, specifically THIS style. When I finally got into hats as an adult, I never could find top hats to try on in person. I only ever found the lower, straighter crowned ones. So, I never took the chance on a...
