That's a great looking Stetson, and while the Fed IV is a very different hat, it would be a shame not to make the Stetson your primary brown-on-brown lid. I am a strong supporter of variety. I say, get the Tawny Fed IV. It looks great, and it's a less common felt/ribbon color combo. Then...
If you plan to wear the hat in the rain, avoid Christy's. If you get a Stetson, avoid dark colors, which have been noted to bleed when wet. I also recommend going for a c-crown, like the Downs, rather than a center crease, like the Temple. I foind the c-crowns hold their shape better.
On the...
I'll admit, my eye for "vintage" isn't great, but the interior of that hat looks very much like current production hats. Still, if it really is fur felt, it's a good deal at that price. My concern is, I see a lot on that auction suggesting that the seller knows very little about the item he's...
I'm with Tomasso. WHat do you mean by "quality?"
For me, when it comes to straw, I have found cheap hats to be better. No doubt, their quality (as I define it) is low, but they seem to wear better. Plus, I don't freak out if I sweat them up or damage them. I have actually found some very...
I agree. I'd like to see this in action with a hat. I have an active imagination, but it's failing me here.
As for the portability of John's hook, it's not just a matter of size. I seem to recall John's had rounded edges and corners, which can cut bulk. I say "remember" because for some...
Is there a story that goes with that warning? I have an image in my mind of some poor passenger getting a concussion and a broken nose from one of those "hard as cement" cowboy hats! lol
I'm inclined to agree with DJH. When you can get a custom hat for nearly the same as a factory job, you'd be better off having a custom duplicate made. It will hold up better in the long run. However, if you simply must have that Benchley, so be it. Modern Stetson aren't nearly as bad as...
I will also add my reassurance. I found my Feds to be slightly big at first, but either by conforming or shrinking, that changed with wear. I recommend not gluing the padding in. You may find you want to remove it later, or replace it with something thinner if you find anything in your travels.
So far, I like the right-left dimensions of the Full better, but I still prefer the front dimension of the Extra Full. However, I find their caps drape and sit differently after they soften up and break in. My assessment may change.
My Hanna has that same problem.
In case you don't know...
