There's a store here in Muskegon (might be Muskegon Heights, the city lines aren't very clear) called "The Hat Collection" that deals in New York Hat Co. stuff as well. I think men's hats are really just a sideline for the owner, however, who seems primarily focused on fancy ladies hats for...
Helios watches?
This thread seems to be getting quite a bit of traffic once again, so I'll try with a question I never got answered before - what can you tell me about "Helios" watches?
I have one, but it's in pretty bad shape.
Sorry for the crummy photo.
I'm wondering if it's...
Well, based on the responses I've been getting, 7 1/8 to 7 1/2 is too far. This is a really nice old hat and I don't want to ruin it. I guess it's up for sale as of now.
Instead I'll have to ask for a new Akubra Federation IV for Christmas.

Ford, Edison, Harvey Firestone, and... I'm drawing a blank on the famous naturalist that used to camp with them. Or was he a horticulturalist? Ford had some interesting friends.

We've got our traditional pre-Thanksgiving few inches of snow here in West Michigan and coincidentally I just found this image on the HAMB:
It's a 1940s-era midget sprint car converted into a snowmobile. I've always been intrigued by snowmobiles, but really turned off by the way they...
Just a point of interest: The 1941 Humphry Bogart Maltese Falcon actually is the remake. There was a film made 10 years before that subsequently retitled Dangerous Female.

My favorite fall and winter sport coat is made from heavyweight cotton. It's finished almost like wool gabardine, but was considerably more affordable. Aside from some discoloration, it's been very hard wearing and comfortable.
Would it be inappropriate to have a complete suit made up in...
Ad that makes snow look nice without Christmas references of the day.

I own two Dobbs fedoras - one is wool and came from Hats in the Belfry, called nothing more than a "Gray Fedora" and the other from The Charleston Hat Man, a Shantung "Panama." Neither has exactly a high quality sweatband, but the one in the Gray Fedora (which will be a year old in a week or...
Just about everything "retro" that I've begun doing since I started dating my wife - Brylcreem, safety razors, three piece suits, fedoras, etc. - has been initially decried as "old mannish" by my wife. I just calmly point out that all old men were young once, and that a lot of these things were...
I wish to echo the opinion that the problem with the current Army Green uniform is not the appearance (though the cut could certainly be improved - possibly into the WWII-style mentioned in the article) but rather the materials from which it is made. Perhaps a return to private-purchase options...
Some of you may remember my acquisition of a Resistol Melorol fedora and a Stetson St. Regis homburg.
The Resistol:
Well, I love the Resistol, but alas it is a 7 1/8, not the 7 1/2 it was sold to me as. I kept it because it's a handsome hat and I figured it could be resized.
Two or...
Both are favorites of mine - I'd love a post-war pickup to use as a work truck. Everyone needs the ability to haul stuff!
And a vintage camper (of any stripe, though an Airstream would be preferred), hauled by a vintage wagon is definitely a must-have someday:

The Boeing Stearman
The Army PT-17 model, because it's got a Continental R-670, made right here in Muskegon in a factory that used to stand where my office now is. Stearmans (Stearmen?) remain remarkably affordable aircraft to this day, which definitely adds to the appeal.
I also really...
