I want to have my Resistol rebuilt.

Some of you may remember my acquisition of a Resistol Melorol fedora and a Stetson St. Regis homburg.

The Resistol:

Well, I love the Resistol, but alas it is a 7 1/8, not the 7 1/2 it was sold to me as. I kept it because it's a handsome hat and I figured it could be resized.

Two or three weeks ago I contacted Henry the Hatter in Detroit about rebuilding this hat in my size (7 3/8 LO) but never got a response. Any suggestions as to whom I should talk to about this project? I'd like to keep my cash outlay low - $100 tops.

Can a 7 1/8ths be stretched up to a 1/2?

I just sent an email to Grant at Optimo (in Bisbee, AZ) asking this same question regarding a very old (70-80 years) felt. I wonder what he'll say.

It depends on the felt of course but Jimmy Pierce recently stretched a Knox hat from a size 7 to halfway between a 7 1/4 and 7 3/8 for me. The hat originally had a 5 1/4 inch crown and 2 3/4 inch brim. It now sports an incredibly straight sided 5 1/2 inch crown and 2 1/2 inch brim. It is possible.

Hey Carter you wouldn't be talking about that nutria would you? ;)

I just realized that you posted a different Optimo than the one in Chicago. I have never dealt with them before. Have you had any experience with them? Are they good at hat repair?

I have not dealt with the Grant at Optimo in Bisbee, AZ. I ran across several recommendations for them while looking for someone to help out our friend in AZ. I'm thinking of giving them a try once I have a response to the email I sent this morning.

Well, based on the responses I've been getting, 7 1/8 to 7 1/2 is too far. This is a really nice old hat and I don't want to ruin it. I guess it's up for sale as of now.

Instead I'll have to ask for a new Akubra Federation IV for Christmas.

I think you are wise, that much of an increase in size will most likely give you a torn brim.
You can go from a 7 3\8 to 7 1\2 without to much harm, but to go from 1\8 to 1\2 would be risking it.
