All I can say is it's the first time Johnny Depp has made me look good.
I get some grief for the hats I have, but I sure don't have two rooms of hats.
Repeat after me: "I'm not as bad as Johnny Depp!"
I was in London a couple of years ago and saw quite a few bowlers in a few days.
As I recall, a few sellers at the Borough Market wore them.
I believe I saw them on people in the antiques trade and other 20-something retailers, too.
Certainly a few on the heads of people in the tourism...
That is the same style tag on my infamous old panama.
Since this derby is from the factory, the manufacture date may be on the back of the sweat. Who got it?
Speaking as a guy with ten thumbs, it's not too hard to cut a ribbon loose,
rotate it a bit, and tack it back down, is it? Not that I've succeeded yet myself,
but as hat making tasks go, it seems like one of the easiest.
That's a nice panama hat.
Let me just say before someone asks, those cattledog pages are from 1948-49, as noted in a different thread.
Gotta love how Madison Avenue changed the world- check out the old coot in the Nutria Quality row, on the right.
Nice lid there Lefty.
It does appear to be black, Lefty.
But I sure would like to see how that one cleans up.
BTW, I owe you guys a pic of how that incredibly fine black Knox I picked up
a few months ago (and was discussed in this thread) cleaned and blocked up.
What a dream of a hat.
Here's a listing I posted in Classifieds for a gray Caxton.
It didn't sell (though the other one I listed did) and I still have it.
Since it's such a nice hat and a friend likes to borrow it, I'm perfectly
glad to have it.
Gray Caxton Ten, Ribbon 1 3/4", brim a hair under 2 3/8".
Brim size...
You're not the only one diggin' it. But tell me- does the venting make a big difference in how cool
the hat is? Does your head really stay cooler? Aside from how cool you look in it, I mean.
Absolutely. In fact, I just took it out and put it on my head while writing this response.
It was near the bottom of a stack of hat boxes, half of which tumbled onto my back while
I retrieved this panama. Hat boxes are harder than hats...
Probably I will need to put something on the...
If it's mine you're talking about, you can read and see more here. It's certainly older than the 40s.
I wonder if size tags were uniformly supplied by the manufacturer? We can see a lot of variation in sweatbands and I suppose they
were often put on the hats in the hat store. I suppose...
One thing I don't understand about Panamas: the ones Sharpetoys and HPG have appear to be fine almost like linen.
The ones delectans (handles only, please!) and I have are solid, visibly much thicker reed. The heavier hats like the ones
delectans and I have are often coated with something (corn...
Oh, I'm so glad you found that. I was just gearing up to post new pictures of that hat because
every time I try to find that thread, I can't.
The only problem I have with that hat is that I'm kinda scared to wear it.
Every time I see it, I just marvel that it's a full 7 5/8. Among other...
So who got the superb Caxton (not as old as it looks, but great)?
Who got the extremely unusual Champ?
I was tempted by this Resistol Milan because I have its brother. Same make, model, store, age, size, AND initials.
Mine's a golden "natural" color. Must have been the same original buyer...
Thanks. Yeah, the silk and the density... I'm not surprised when I think about it.
I may have to move to a wider ribbon. It would hide other sins as well.
