I really like vintage Florsheims. Very well-built shoes that, even secondhand, can be refurbished and see many years of service.
If you're the right size, or just lucky, you might even find dead stock in your size.
Not a justification, just a preference. They're all adequate for any task.
Edit: I take it back. It lies somewhere between preference and necessity. My handwriting is far less legible with the wrong nib, and since I write for my secretary as well as myself, I don't think I could get along...
My response would be "I hate most ballpoints and I take pleasure in having a specific fountain pen for a specific job." It's not a great burden to have two, five, or hell fifteen if I wanted, fountain pens in my briefcase or desk. I'm also not so inflexible that I can't survive with a Zebra...
Hi Doc,
Fine if you don't like my collection (an accumulation, really), but I'll be the judge of my writing needs. Even if I decided to pare down, I'd still keep the Waterman and the Sheaffer. The Waterman is too fine for my handwriting and turns it into chicken scratch if I'm writing a...
I think the idea was that maybe people's perceptions of "timely" had changed - sort of like the transition from the nightly news to instant news updates via your smartphone. Waiting for "news at 11" is no longer a timely way to get info.
I knew about the Olds from the radio series. The only early car I'm familiar with is the circa 1938 Plymouth business coupe he drives in the 1946 film version of The Big Sleep.
Well, it can finally be told: Last month we traded in our 1882 Victorian for a 1941 Cape Cod*.
The interiors are mostly original with only slight 1990s redecorating. I’ve been spending a lot of time on the Retro Renovation blog admiring Mid Century Modest interiors. First up is a pink...
I don’t think it’s too bad, and I have a 9 1/4" hand span. For comparison, here are my most-commonly used pens laid out:
Left to right:
1) Pentel Rolling Writer - I don’t actually use these, but it’s what the Noodler reminds me of.
2) Noodler - a wee bit smaller than the Pentel.
3) Zebra...
I just received a bottle of Noodler's Eel Red and a Noodler's Orange-Red, Piston Fill. I loaded the former into the latter and must say I'm quite pleased. Yes, the pen is very lightweight, but it feels well made and writes very nicely - sort of an intermediate step between the disposable Pilot...
On the subject of reproduction Auburn Speedsters, I always thought this was the best concept for improving the somewhat awkward looks of the early ones:
More here.
Not carrying it yet, but I just ordered a Noodler's "Red-Orange Piston Fill" off Amazon, along with a bottle of "Rattler Red" ink. Should be good for making notes on documents I'm editing. I also ordered another bottle of Private Reserve Lake Placid Blue to keep feeding my Sheaffer Prelude - I...
I've only seen it once, and never fired it. My dad had fired it a couple times with my grandfather and said it was a very nice shooter. Unfortunately, at some point he'd thought it would be a good idea to refinish the stock all bright and shiney. As far as I recall, the metal was untouched...
Funny you should mention that. As it happens, my maternal grandfather was an inspector at SSG during the war and one of the nicer shooting specimens followed him home and now belongs to my uncle.
Well, that’s interesting. I haven’t un-mummified the M1A1 and all that is marked on the package is “M1A1" in contrast with the Quality Hardware gun which is likewise mummified but clearly marked for the maker.
Am I correct in my recollection that a Winchester Carbine is nonetheless fairly...
I finally got around to picking up my dad’s gun collection from my mom the other day. I have yet to divvy up things with my brother, but since there are three M1 Carbines in the collection, it’s a safe bet I’ll end up with one. Two are too rare to shoot (Winchester-made M1A1 and a Quality...
I would be carrying this one in my wallet, but its 40-year-old ink cartridge has gone dry. Anyone know where I can get a refill for Dad's old GI Skilcraft? I know it's NSN Part/No: 7510-00-543-6792 but I haven't yet figured out where a civilian can purchase them!
Thanks!
If Crown Victorias have aluminum hoods and trunks, I'd be surprised. Otherwise, it wouldn't be safe to park one outside in most areas. Scrappers are voracious and brazen when it comes to aluminum, copper, and brass.
