Count Basie recorded an album with Beatles songs that was very good! The cover was probably a joke (Count with a lot of kids), but Basie's Orch is always a pleasure to listen.

About the weight of the stylus in gramophones in 20s... Once I readed (The Gramophone Handbook, by Percy Wilson) that the recomended weight was 5 to 5 1/2 oz!!

    do you have many friends?

I didn't have an open mind for friendships. Just when I found myself, just 16 y.o., alone in 16-millions city, and no one to talk I changed my way...

    do you have many friends?

Agree! Maybe because at university we all have "open minds" to make new friends. And when we are in another city, living alone, we really are looking for friendship. And is curious as today is easier to have friendship with people by internet and not with people we meet in person...

Yes (and it still is). In those days with the money from coffee - the very first reason for all the railroads around. But passengers trains no more here. And the two greatest stations (Luz and the Sorocabana Station - this one a copy of the Penn Station in NY) got a strong decadence for long...

Here is São Paulo steampunks are not so organized as in USA... The folks I knew were very atracted by the literature, and some tried ever to start writing in a H.G. Wells style. All I knew were a little younger, around 20-25 y.o. But their "XIXth Century" is a purelly literaly, fantasious one -...

I have talked with some guys from taht group, and I've found they are most about XIXth century sci-fiction... And suprisingly they know very well not only Jules Verne, but all sci-fi by Conan Doyle and W.G Wells (all very hard to find here).

    What Are You Reading

The few I readed are probably the last ones (like Sainct in New York). I think Charteris made a kind of psichotic caracter, and this looked me very different.

    What Are You Reading

Charteris is probably one of the most underrated thriller writers I know. Discovered his books last year, and liked a lot!

Here is SP there is an enormous, classical, train station, from 1901 (the Luz Station), constructed in English style. And this station is where a few guys and girls meet wearing stylized XIXth century clothes (they call themselves "stampunk"). Usually they become "the talk of town".

    Ladies with cigarettes

Just found this in my sheet music collection... From beggining of 20s. It's a fox-trot, not a wonderful one, but a pleasing and slow.

A few more sheets... This time for piano, from my own collection. "When Buddha Smiles" was the very first I bouht. A funny, happy fox-trot by Nacio Herb Brown - and almost forgotten. This sheet probably is from 1925 or 1926. This fox-trot is interesting because the band that played it...

My Wife Couldn't Stand My 78's!

Happilly my wife likes the sime kind of music than me. Just sometimes she doesn't like to listen classical music at night, as me. Her trouble about 78s is just about they are so fragile and take a lot of space. I still don't have a large place to store them, so I stopped to get as many as I...

The most interesting "cultural study" I ever read was one about cigarrette boxes. A long forgoteen study, from late 70s. But these brought some very fine details about the quickly changing life details in Brazil from 1900 to 1930s. The problem is when in a ideological (not sure if this is the...

Agree! But probably he was well-know at those days, because his book was translated and published here. Symon's "The Big Bands", for example, was only published in 1992. I think Mr Jones' work must be readed as an example of studies of those days. A scholar who wanted to write about people...

    Unpopular music opinions

Certainly. Just got to read a book by LeRoy Jones, from 1963 (my translated version from 1967). A sociological study about negro and jazz in american society. A perfect example about Mss Lizie is talking about. I don't know if his ideas about american society are correct; but his...

...And Shostakovich! (but for XXth Century russians composers, I really love Rachmaninoff. Sorry that I never could play his music at the piano - too difficult).
