Yes it's true. Still that way now with modern Navy deck jackets (both the windproof/flame-resistant version and the Mustang-brand floatation style jackets). The ship's name is often stenciled across the back.
I also have a PB blue Navy zip-front deck jacket; Looking at their size chart I fell between a L and an XL. I went with the XL since I wanted room for layering (still have nightmares about our last winter deep-freeze event!) and I have long arms (absolutely abhor sleeves that are too short)...
Personally, I think it's a great overall look! I usually go casual in my leather jackets but I do wear a shirt and tie with my A-2 or M-422 (G-1) at work.
Yes Edward your fuzzy memory is quite correct. Starsky was the rough-around-the-edges, wear-anything, say-anything tough guy. Hutch was a bit more "refined". LOL.
Looking back, most of us would definitely raid Starsky's closet for those original vintage clothes!
I think the prop department raided all the local vintage stores for Paul Michael Glaser's "Starsky" wardrobe. I remember the character wearing lots of old leather jackets, an Army M-65 field coat and vintage jeans.
