Steve I am 100% pleased with the entire process, from intro e-mails to choosing hide and lining color to final measurement/sizing. Really appreciated the almost daily updates! It was like we were making this jacket in a creative design partnership rather than me just placing a clinical credit...
After contemplating several options for a new M-422a repro, I stumbled upon Mr. Steve Sellers (Greatest Generation Clothing Co.) on VLJ. He owns several vintage G-1/M-422/AN-J-3 jackets, including examples from Willis and Geiger. We e-mailed back and forth and soon struck up a deal to produce a...
Cagleco/Ralph Edwards made G-1 jackets for the Navy. From what I've read, the company started using the name Ralph Edwards on G-1 labels in 1960. Interestingly, your jacket has both Cagleco and Ralph Edwards on the label so perhaps this jacket was made during this transient period in the company...
Larger size G-1 jackets always fetch more; sometimes it depends on who's selling it and where you find it; e-bay has been referred to as "greed-bay" while some lucky guys find a vintage G-1 in a local used clothing store or flea market for less than $100. Good luck!
You're correct Deacon; the M-421 was basically a G-8 but in khaki cotton twill. The diamond elbow patches were on the M-421 as well as the sheepskin M-444.
That's actually the thing (things?) I like about the G-8; it's a amalgamation of all the details I'm fond of in a leather jacket: A-2 collar, G-1 patch pockets & underarm gussets, M-444 diamond elbow reinforcements, vintage civilian style button cuffs, plus an Indiana Jones-esque overall look...
Quite afew WWII pilots and airman procured "private purchase" (civilian) leather jackets and wore them in uniform and while flying. Some of these non-military jackets are even profiled in Jon A. MacGuire's famous book "American Flight jackets, airmen and aircraft".
I've heard that the G-8 was...
Grain-wise that jacket is certainly inconsistent, but at least the color/shade matches. Some of the hides used by some are all over the place color-wise and one panel of an A-2 may be solid russet while another adjoining it is reddish or almost a seal brown shade in contrast. I don't know if...
+1
I have one of these LLB jackets with the one-piece back and they are really nice quality. I think it's really cool to convert it to a uniform jacket! Go for it!

I'm selling a mint condition vintage LL Bean sheepskin leather bomber jacket on the 'Bay. It's a large size 46 Long. Real mouton collar. Real sheepskin lining. Made in USA. A great, stylish bomber that will keep you super warm in...
Wow! That's amazing Steve! Looks spot on. You could almost call that a NOS ("new old stock") AN-J-3. It's like a peek back in time into the Willis & Geiger jacket factory circa 1943.
