I've read that the AVG traveled incognito (civilian clothes) aboard passenger ship to China and were issued uniforms once they arrived. The government arranged for lots of Navy gear to be issued, including crates of M-422a jackets from Willis & Geiger; maybe they sent boxes of size 46 and 48...
The Flying Tigers blood chit flag is now the flag of Taiwan; the People's Republic of China have a new flag.
You never know if someone might mistake a historic blood chit as some kind of political statement and act confrontational towards the wearer.
The new Eastman site is nice however being in the U.S. I love the new HPA site! All sorts of drop down tabs and links to specific jacket measurements in varying sizes. The Devon fleece Irvin is a limited edition jacket and from the description it is very difficult to procure the proper fleece...
I received an automated e-mail a week ago stating, in part:
"By now, most of you should have received your custom orders from last November's big bang, however, we are aware that there is a handful of you that have still yet to receive your products. If you are still waiting, we hope that the...
I'm really thrilled with mine Charles. Super-comfy and great details, plus first class materials and construction (as one would expect from Buzz Rickson). Thanks again!
Check out Church Street Surplus (Church & Canal street in Chinatown). Racks and racks of vintage clothing, old denim, military surplus, as well as other odds and sods.
Also, there's a new Filson retail store downtown (40 Great Jones street) that's worth a look.
Not sure about the first one, but the jacket in your second link looks like a Spearhead Militaria A-2. They're made in China and have a very stiff, plastic-like finish to their leather. I'd go with a U.S. Wings budget A-2, or try What Price Glory. They make a nice A-2 that is pretty good quality...
I read "Masters of the air" by Donald L. Miller. The book is a masterpiece of writing; a balanced, thought-provoking and thorough account of strategic "precision" bombing in Europe and it really brings the reality of war to life.
Someone posted a photo of their jacket with a substantial wear mark from their seatbelt shoulder strap. The color/finish had worn off in that one area (upper left shoulder if it's the States since we have left hand drive). I suppose the same could happen over time with the shoulder strap of a...
Great fitting jacket Big J! And interesting that you mention being able to swim in your M-422a....the original design for the Navy M-422 flight jacket specified a bi-swing back and underarm gussets to allow downed Naval aviators enough freedom of movement to swim if they ditched in the sea. In...
Hey Worf, ol' buddy, I'm afraid the pics I posted were not of my collection (sadly), just an assortment of photos I found on-line of vintage G-1 style jackets to demonstrate the variety of faded mouton fur found on 40+ year old original jackets.
Currently I have two M-422a repro's but a third is...
Vintage faded mouton has so many unique shades and variations. On a brand new repro M-422a, I prefer a medium brown/slight reddish brown mouton and just letting it fade naturally over time.
