I grew up in a house of games. 10pt Pitch at my grandma's, Conasta at grandmothers, contract bridge at home- among many others.

As an adult I play Cribbage, but finding players is tough, and Backgammon- again finding players is tough. I play poker on occasion but much prefer the above games.

I love these "vintage" games rather than the computer. You have to interact with eachother, and you have to think if you are going to win consistantly. I read of another FL'r that loved the game of GO- Thanks for the inspiration.

Do any of you play cards, backgammon etc actively? I miss playing and my wife isn't much for games...

All the best,

CH

My father and I played the card game Casino while my mother was in the hospital/rehab center. It's a fun game that involves taking tricks.

Good old fashion checkers. I used to play our son for hours. Like a good puzzle in winter as long as it is not more than 500 pieces. I get bored fast with it after making the edges. lol

All games--Gin Rummey, Bridge, Cribbage, dominos--all good! Our favorite is a card game we learned in a pub in England called Shit Head--we shorten it to Sh'ed (don't want to scare the horses....). Backgammon is another favorite--there is sand from multiple holidays in our backgammon set. There are also fun old English party games like Consequences. So much fun over the yeaars and it is great to teach kids to count--especially Cribbage.... Of course, the headmaster at the kids' scholl always looks at ud in a funny way....

Checkers growing up, then Euchre at family gatherings after you'd proved you could handle your own cards without calling the wrong suit, or wantonly reneging or trumping your partners hand.

During spares in highschool knowing your way around euchre, gin, and a-hole/janitor/what-have-you were de rigeur.

Scrabble on occasion, but I either have bad luck drawing good letters, seeing what I could play on, or I don't know nearly enough obscure words to really make off with the game.

Backgammon is what I play most, now. One of my Turkish friends and I go to a little restaurant/cafe sort of place where we can smoke Narghile, drink tea ,and throw the dice for hours on end.

I always want to learn how to play the really snazzy sounding games like Baccarat, but they seem to be a rather serious undertaking, and not worth getting into if you aren't going to put money on it.

The Dictionary Game...

I was able to liven up a fairly tense dinner party with the dictionary game. A good dictionary is required. I find old English dictionary's contain lots more rarely heard of words.

Each player is handed a piece of paper and a pencil for scoring. The first person has to read out a word selected at random from the dictionary and say what the word means. The player has the option of fabricating the description, but must think on their feet.

The other players have to say wether they accept the description. They can even offer an alternative. In this way, each player is scored according to convincingness.

'Shqurl'. This is the name given to the knot Sherpa's use to fasten loads to donkeys.

Trust me....

No its not! I happen to know its a new rap singer!

Nope, its a Maori hunting stick.

You get the idea.

Not "playing" or for "amusement", but I use Axis & Allies Miniatures (both "wet" and "dry" sides) to study tactics, or for reenacting large-scale battles--I also plan on using 'em as visual aids once I manage to get myself a college WWII History professorship...

I am so good at cheating in A&A :D

We used to play Mah Jong every sunday. I loved it. Not for money or anything though, just for points.

The best game I have played recently though, came from a 1930s book about parlour games, and is called Orange Battle, wherein opponants face each other with a spoon in each hand, and an orange balanced on one spoon, and each tries to dislodge the other's orange. More infor and pictures on the link. We're pushing for an official event in London 2012! lol

My friends, family and I tend to play a lot of classic board and card games- monopoly, Risk, A&A, Clue, Sorry, and Trivial Pursuit are generally favourites.

As for card games- president, egyptian ratscrew, and crazy 8s mostly, but we play a lot of card games that have specialty decks, like Uno, Skip-bo, Phase 10, etc. My favourite card game is Dutch Blitz though, a few of my amish and mennonite friends got me hooked on it :'D

Coming from a Chinese family, Mahjong is really the only game we played with any regularity (although we also play Scrabble and UPwords on occasion).

Mahjong was a big fad/craze in the United States during the 1920s. So that puts this game squarely into the Golden Era. I don't really follow any set of rules. I can remember the basics of the game, but I need a refresher before I play each time.

My family has always played a lot of Euchre. I usually partner with my cousin, and we've played so many hands together that people swear we cheat or are psychic.

Poker is nearly a job for me, mainly No Limit Hold'em, but also Pot Limit Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo.
