My daughter and I have been playing a lot of UNO lately. Whenever I'm back home, the family usually gets a game of 7 or 10 point pitch going. My ex and I used to play Scrabble all the time, too.

Cribbage, Gin Rummy (when my parents were still around), poker (dad taught me the nuances of the game).

When I was a kid, I played "snakes and ladders", Chinese Checkers, chess (never very good at it), Monopoly.

As a teen I ventured into the classic Avalon Hill wargames - Panzerblitz, Gettyburg and 3rd Reich.

As an adult - Trivial Pursuit (I'm really good at that one) and some computer games that I am addicted to on an intermittent basis.

as I am procrastinating greatly today I would like to add 2 side notes. :eek:fftopic:

I recently saw on TV where adults went to like a club but it was a club for games. People actually got together and played board games. I found it fascinating.

if you do a search for board game clubs more comes up as well.

When I was a child my grandfather in a small town was a Cty. Commissioner. Some of us grandkids would stay the summer with him. In the city he lived in there was a swimming pool and community type building. It had shelves of board games and ping pong. Kids would check out a game like a library book and play for hours at tables. Then check the game back in. This may be something common other cities did but I had never heard of it before. It was amazing and I great memories of these summers.

I adore games! Pretty much any game that doesn't have a screen, i'm in!

As a kid we played Scrabble by Dad's choice and Trivial Pursuit by Mom's (still one of my favorites). I've always loved Balderdash as well (much like Talbot's Dictionary Game). My brother taught me chess when i was 9, and to this day i've beat him one time - in middle school when i played fairly seriously.

College contained many, many all-night Risk games, and all-night Mao games. Oh, yes, and i was a D&D nerd - starting at about 8 thanks to the brother, and then again in college after a long break.

But card games are my absolute favorite. I carried a deck in my pocket at all times in middle school - i could beat the entire homeroom class at Speed, and i could play a pretty mean game of Spades, not to mention a few slick tricks. Too bad i've forgotten all that ;) Some friends and profs started a Bridge club in college - i played for two years and never got good, but it is a simply brilliant game; i'd still play if i had folks to play with. I've always enjoyed Euchre as well.

Last year my mom's students taught her dominoes - it's become our family go-to family game any time the four of us are actually in the same place.

Haha, all that is to say that i'd play any game you're willing to teach me; i only wish i knew anyone else who liked games too!!

Trivial Pursuit! But a deck of cards can be used to many fun games!
And, if you're playing Genus Edition and the question's looking for a person's name, answering "Winston Churchill" if you don't know gives you an automatic 1-in-4 chance--seriously, he's the answer to 25% of the "people" questions!

Ah, but that's "board", right? The Collectible Miniatures Games, both land and sea, are two different balls o' wax--and I'd certainly be willing to check ya out on 'em if we ever cross paths and I have "The Horde" with me...

At the casino I like to play craps. For board games I like back gammon, sorry, parcheesee, Risk.

I used to like playing poker but haven't in ages. I used to know how to play card games like Hearts, Spades, and canasta but don't remember at all now. Gin Rummy was fun.

I liked to play couples badminton, horse shoes and Jarts.

I read of another FL'r that loved the game of GO- Thanks for the inspiration.
I think I'm the Go maniac you mentioned :) I try to get several games in each week and go to tournaments when I can. I specifically started playing Go because I wanted a hobby that didn't revolve around a computer or TV screen and now it's pretty much the only game I play.

However, when I was in college we used to play a dice game called Holy Fours. The rules of the game were basically the same as the well known game 10,000 except if you rolled a pair of fours as your last two non-scoring dice you could pick up all the dice and roll again. We also played the game with 5 dice instead of the 6 described in the link.

I've always loved the classics like Monopoly, chess, charades and so on...

I just wonder, why doesn't anyone play croquet anymore? I played it my whole childhood with lots of my family, and nowdays no one even seems to know what in the world it is. That or they think Alice In Wonderland, lol. I also miss playing horseshoes...

As an adult I play Cribbage, but finding players is tough, and Backgammon- again finding players is tough. I play poker on occasion but much prefer the above games...Do any of you play cards, backgammon etc actively? I miss playing and my wife isn't much for games

Dear CH, we have similar tastes and, sadly, similar fates: I've always loved games--or, should say, the concept of games! An only child with parents who didn't care for games....and married, like yourself, to a wife who doesn't either. She's a good sport; we manage to play a game or two a year...usually on my birthday :)

My favorites are yours—cribbage and Backgammon—and I'll add another to the list: Muggins dominos. All three games, to me, are perfect balances of skill and luck: no long-term strategy can be attempted because of the element of chance; they force you to think of your BEST move at a given time. And that can change from move to move. Those that like games such as chess will probably have other opinions.

Another wonderful game that should be better known, IMHO, is Crokinole. Our Canadian (or at least Ontarian) friends most likely grew up with it...but it's almost unknown down here. You really need four people to play it for full effect, though!

Here's a great site about the game:
http://www.crokinole.com/

Wayne is THE authority, and the source: I bought my c1890 board from him. It hangs on the wall more than it gets played on, I'm afraid...but when it does come down, there's a good time had by all:

Chess is interesting to play, while the rules for moving the pieces are relatively simple, it's the tactics and the ability to see ahead that is the hardest portion of the game.

I wonder if flirting would be considered a tactic..

Unfortunately, I like gambling a little too much, if you know what I mean, so favorite games are video poker and other such games found in casinos.

I also play games on Pogo and have even purchased a couple of games from them, the kind in which you have to collapse sets of threes to win points or clear the board.

I get obssessive with games for awhile, then I get bored.

Not much for card games, even when I was a kid. We mostly played Monopoly, a game I do like, even now, and I think some mystery game, like Clue.

I enjoy Scrabble, never win anything as I am too busy trying to find the perfect word, paying no mind where I drop it.

I do recall some of the neighbor kids, the ornery kids, played strip poker one time and invited me to join. I was the only girl. I won because I made sure I had my hair up in bobby pins (does that date me?). Every time I lost, I took out a bobby pin. By the end of the game, the boys were all down to their underwear and only half my hair was undone.
