After reading through some of this thread, I guess Cavanagh, at least their fedoras, came with a frayed bow. I only have one other, the thin ribbon 100 and it does not. Made some photos of this black hole this morning. 5 3/4" open crown with a 2 5/8 brim. Incredible felt. Just put a simple dry crease in this one. Gonna have to break out the steam and "practice" to get anywhere near Robert's fine crease that he put on his. No idea on the age of this one.

My new Cavanagh. I have gathered from reading through this thread and The Proffessor's website and another thread on Cav liner dating , that my hat is probably late 1930's to early 1940's. The Park Ave. address on the logo gave me a window of 1936 to 1950. The sweatband narrowed it further. It is a Carter removable sweat.... Cavanagh only used these for a very short time . Just a couple years into the 1940's.

As to the dating of it. I got this from The Hatted Prof. website. "Cavanagh first put the words "Cavanagh Edge" at the front of the sweatband of their hats starting October 1, 1952." I would guess your was made around that time.

That's very kind of you to say, Greg. It's a lot of fun putting a crease in a new old hat.... It's a little like sculpting! Haha.
My Cavanagh came to me with some kind of telescoping crease/ porkpie look. I feel fortunate that Cavanagh used such outstanding felt in their hat making. It was re-shaped in no time.

Early John Cavanagh Ltd. 247 Park Avenue, New York derby. This one is most likely an equestrian mode. Many interesting features, and loads of patina on this c.1926 offering. Dating is based on the C & K mfg tag under the laced sweat and the original liner logo. It has a padded (quilted with some backing fiber) liner that was originally sewed in. The little ring on the underside of the brim makes me think it was for a lanyard of some type. The size is embossed on the sweat as "Seven One Quarter". All in all a cool "museum piece" the fine stitching on the sweat is all but gone. It will live in the derby case I got with my old Christy's Bowler.

This one is mid to late 1940's. Green with a purplish ribbon. the original owner didn't wear it much judging by the condition. 2 1/2 inch brim . It came with a center dent... I didn't have the heart to change it so I just reworked it a bit.

I have a beautiful Cav
Only somewhere in its life someone trimmed the cav edge off and left a 2 1/2” raw edge... still a beautiful hat ... but having a cav without a cav edge is kinda like a banana split with no banana
