There are not many left hatters in Italy that produce bespoke hats.
In this regard, I attach two links: the first "Maurizio Bazar" a group of artisans from Rome who works for film and television and theater and has a section devoted to custom hats. http://www.mauriziobazar.com/english/home.htm
The other one "Anrica Manifattura Cappelli", always an atelier in Rome, which mainly produces women's hats, but also has great (in photography) examples of hats for men. (Very interesting photos of wood blocks and so on)

Maurizio Bazar can carry many forms of hat on request. They also work on the single cap for individuals (I inquired for this purpose) .
There at the end of the catalog an interesting choice of felts with which to make the hats.

For your visits to Rome you can order your hat in advance and find it packed on arrival in the Eternal City.

Do not forget Melegari in Milan which is always a hater of excellent quality

White Cervo Bantam

This is the first time I come accross a bunch of Cervo high level hats in new conditions.
I have the opportunity to have some of them in the last week from a close shop in the south Italy.

Almost white Cervo Bantam with black ribbon in fur felt

Size 60 or 7 1/2 US with crown at 12.5 cm (5 inches) and brims 5.5 cm (2.17)

The felt is thick with medium pliability, unlined

Excellent finishes with a a good sweatband

It is market "loden" and the felt has a short hair surface

Color is "Montecarlo" and is a almost white good shade

It is new and never worn. A good find for my Cervo collection

Second Cervo with surprise: it is a Tonak!

It is clear from the inside paper label that the hat was made in Czechoslovakia

The felt is very similar to others TONAK I have

I had a suspicion when I tried to shape it, it had the same "reactions" of Tonak.
I looked under the sweat band and so it was.

The green felt is very dense with a suede finish, very pliable.

Size 58 or 7 1/4 US with crown at 11 cm (4.35 inches) and overwelt brims 5cm (2 inches)

The mark on the lining and on the sweatband are out of the usual graphics used by Cervo

The question I have asked to myself is: why does a company like Cervo build the hats from a European competitor? When was this Czech production for one of the average Italian manufacturers of hats?

It's from the communist time (see Czechoslovakia) period. I wonder if Week "85" is actually the production year (although it looks older)? Probably finish and price related. Cervo could source a complete hat with Antelope finish at a low price point.

TONAK was also known for this type of finish so price + finish makes sense. When I visited TONAK in 2011 I saw a Guerra hat. JHS made complete hats for British makers (others) up to WWII and TONAK did the same post WWII. They both also supplied felt Stumpen and Capeline.

Thought Guerra was using FEPSA? Guess they use both? I bought a Guerra GQ (NOS) stamped 2007 inside the sweatband and now I'm wondering who manufactured the body...?

I just noticed a Guerra hat when I visited the TONAK factory back in 2011. I would guess Guerra is sourcing from different suppliers (making some hats in house and sourcing others). They are a small operation. TONAK also sells raw and processed fur (hare and rabbit).

Bob your Guerra could be 100% Italian.
Italian felt is still produced and some years ago more than now.
The biggest regret of the few remaining hatters in Italy, excluding Borsalino, is not to find the most excellent Italian production of felts, starting from the beautiful wool hats Monza exported all over the world and the fur felt produced in Piedmont that did great the Italian hatters.
There is not only FEPSA in Italy ;-)

Greenish Cervo Bantam

This is the third Cervo Bantam of the serie show in these days

Little surprise also in this hat:

It seems built for the European market boasting its US "origin" in its realization

Size is 60 (7 1/2 US) made in greenish fur felt short hair with crown at 12 cm (4.75 inches) and overwelted brim at 5.5 cm. (2.15 inches)

NOS with a white linen and gold stamps

Ribbon is greenish/yellow satin 4.5 cm (1.75 inches) with excellent bow.

Felt is very pliable and soft. A real great find

Thats nice to know. I would like that to be true. 100% Italian felt made in Italy. If it was a cigar it would be a "Puro." I also believe reading a post on the Lounge (maybe it was you?) That there are some nice straws crafted in Marche Province. Thats where my Mothers family is from and I would like to look into that but don't know where to begin. Any ideas? Thx.

The only other hat manufacturer in Italy who makes their own felt is Cervo. I wish there was another choice!!
