Five Star Leather Jackets

Man, the fit is perfect. Enjoy it and wear it in good health

Thank you so much!

same thing happened to me with my Schott 141. Tailor did an insane job actually making that jacket look like a piece of art from the box it used to be. But he missed holes, didn't finish stitching. Was a mess. I got past it after about a week because the cut is just perfect. I haven't tried this "putty" but what I did do was dampen the holes and then blast them with a hair dryer to get them to cinch up. Now that's with Schott leather, don't know what will happen to the Five Star stuff, so proceed with caution. It didn't 100% fix it, but I'd say at least 70%.

I'll think about that as I don't want to damage the leather more. I'll probably try on a hidden spot and see how it reacts. Many thanks for the tip!

Great fit Riu, fill the stitch holes..

Thank you @bn1966! I'll probably try a few things and see what the outcome will be.

Thank you! The forearm was already trim before but now it's a bit tighter and I didn't want that. I'll have a look at that leather putty later on after wearing the jacket for a while. What do you mean when the lining allows?

I'm trying to forget all about the holes but it's just too fresh and it's stuck in my head for now :D I know there is a solution for everything, I was just hoping it won't be the case.

Indeed, it's good to know there's a workaround for this. I'll see how it shapes by wearing it more and then probably get back to those nasty holes.
when the lining inside is still roomy the leather on the forearm will expand overtime, the first day I got my vegtan jacket I was really afraid I made a huge mistake since my forearm is just impossibly tight, when I bend my elbow and the sleeve rise a bit I feel my hand numb after awhile, few months later it is fine. leather just expand if the lining inside allows it.

Maybe a leather worker can put a leather Taping on those Stich holes (B3 leather Taping ) with the edges tucked in .But the jacket probably isn't near and dear enough .Or you distress these parts so the suede disguises the holes .

I think everyone in here likes thick leather but stiff. Personally, I prefer thick and soft leather (Like @Riu CR jacket. I really like the leather, grain, softness.) Because for me when the leather is thick and soft, it feels more comfortable to wear on. With thick, stiff, movement will be uncomfortable. Can anyone tell me why everyone wants thick, stiff leather?

I don't really have much experience with stiffer leather but I like how it feels overall, how it develops and shapes around your body. Also, I feel like it's got a personality compared to soft buttery leather which is much easier to wear indeed and doesn't need break-in but it will look more or less the same over the years.

I know that a thick soft feel leather will feel comfortable out of the box like let's say naked cowhide/moose/deerskin and it will be an immediate fave because of how easy it is to wear. Some prefer to break in the jacket so the jacket will form around the wearer, the crease/rolls/folds will be more pronounced on what you mention a "stiff" jacket like chrome/veg tanned cowhide or horsehide

I am working on a modified version of the "CIVILIAN VINTAGE 1930'S CLASSIC MEN REAL LEATHER JACKET" on the Five Star Leather website with Shawn. It will be in buffalo leather. He said it will be around 350$. Has his price been about the same for others with modified models?

Yes he has quoted me the same exact price several time for different builds, which included shipping to USA, for a jacket modified in every way plus new pattern, leather and hardware upgrades etc

Hello Irvin/shearling lovers
I need some advice on my irvin project .My old Irvin style jacket got stolen and I got my sample kit from Shawn today .I need a bit of advice on my project .Should I play it safe and go with seal with russet trim or try to recreate my old red/purple cognac trim jacket (the Irvin with pockets below )
I am not 100% sure if the light colour fur would work with shawns redskin .
Thank for any input and advice

I would wait for Mr. Proper to comment. I had mentioned an Irvin custom with 5*, and he mentioned they don't have a correct shearling for that yet. Maybe that has changed in the internet.

You won't get a historically correct version with Shawn's Shearling. I would wait until Shawn has the "right" shearling for an Irvin.
But if you just want the style of an Irvin, I think both variants are good. But I only know seal shearling and therefore don't know how red the Redskin actually is. Play it safe = seal. Daring = reddish brown.

Edit: I just saw an irvin in Seal here. Looks cool. I could imagine for myself

I am on the fence about the redskin. The colour looks kinda fleshy .I gave it a war time nitro cellulose topcoat to see how it looks.
Mr.Proper how does the topcoat wear after some time ? It feels like a acrylic top coat.
I might do the seal russet and get the other colour variant by Simmons Bilt because they said they could source almost the same colour like my noble House.

But then I would also consider Aero. I think Aero has the best RAF Irvin.
No idea what the top coat is made of. But i like it. I can take detailed photos.

My latest aquisition from 5*: Cafe Racer made from premium black goat skin.

After the Moto jacket from Jean Shop NYC had been shown to me quite often on Pinterest, the desire for it became great enough for let Shawn recreate it.
But without a central seam on the back, slightly smaller gussets and with a heavy cotton drill instead of quilted lining.
And of course according to my measurements.
Since I have the Premium Goatskin from 5* in russet and seal, but black is still missing and this was also the leather recommendation from @ton312 , it became the black goat.

The leather is a little softer than my seal-colored one and, subjectively, seems to be slightly thinner.
The weight of the jacket is quite light at approx. 4 lbs and corresponds to my other mid weight jackets (more or less).
However, the jacket is as comfortable to wear as a fabric jacket. I would even go so far as to say it's my most comfortable leather jacket alongside my shearling.

Which details were important to me?
  • Round shoulders (very important)
  • Smaller gussets than the original
  • No central seam on the back, but the side seams do
  • Zippers on the inside of the forearms
  • Front drop
  • Slightly curved sleeves
  • Nickel hardware
  • High armholes
  • All my measurements (shoulders, P2P, waist, hem, height of waist, neck circumference, size of the armhole, elbow, wrist, sleeve length, body length, frontdrop, position and width of the chest pockets, length of the zips on the sleeves)

Only the wire puller I wanted on the zipper only looks like a wire puller but isn't. Maybe I'll swap it out.

But overall I would say Shawn delivered again :D
