So I'm 6'3", 190 pounds. I wear a 44 long jacket, and 32-34w x 36l" pants. I have a heck of a time finding suits. I was looking at a couple of online places with good prices; Overstock.com for one, and for a 44L, they list the pants as a 39" waist only, unfinished hem.
Are suits sold this way able to be tailored down 5 inches in the waist? I would think the back pockets would be touching each other!
As for big ant tall departments and shops, I've tried that too, they mostly don't go under a 36" waist to begin with.
Any other giraffes out there that can shed some light?

Usually suits are sold with a six inch drop from the jacket size to the trousers. You might want to go to stores such as Brooks Brothers that now sell separates. Many stores are starting to do that.

Good luck and keep us posted

Tailors regularly re-cut trousers when a reduction of more than a few inches is required. It's a pricey alteration ($60-80) requiring the expertise of a competent tailor (easier said than done). Many men with extreme drops (myself among them) have turned to MTM/Bespoke because it's difficult to find a tailor to do a decent re-cut.

As Bugsy mentioned, the BrooksEase separates are an option but from what I've seen, the garments are of mediocre construction with the cloth selection being basic, at best.

I'm in the same boat you are buddy! I'm of a thoroughly modern build also. 6'2, 42-43" chest, and 36x36" trousers. Normally if I find vintage set that has a fitting jacket, it's got to small/ short of trou.

I have had my tailor use the more than extra material of too large pants into front pleats. It has been fairly successful for me.

That's a great idea! There is a tailor down the street, I think I'll stop in and ask them about it. If I need a 34" waist and the pants are 39", between the back and putting pleats in the front, maybe they can make 5" vanish!

Athletic cut suits have 8" drop from coat size to pants waist and the waist area of coat is cut slimmer as well. Made for guys just like you. The waist reduction to get those to your 32-34 waist won't leave the pants so ill proportioned.
Not every haberdasher has these but if you look you should find them in some stores.

You're in better shape than I am. I'll never find a suit that fits me, as I wear a 46 Short jacket, and buy 44 Long pants, for the long rise and slightly extra room in the waistband. 46 and 44, does that make me close to being square?lol
