    foam rollers vs velcro rollers?

I've never seen sponge rollers that couldn't stand up to heat. Heat makes a HUGE difference when it comes to how quickly your hair will set and how long it will last. Even zapping mine with a blow dryer several times for a few minutes at a time really helps me get longer lasting curls.

And if you did iron it, the wrinkles will just be back as soon as you put it on :)

well those shiny strips don't indicate ruin. They will eventually go away on their own.

Ironing Woes...Love the vintage Hate the ironing

A heavy iron helps, but I don't agree that it's really that necessary. What IS necessary, however, is having a *quality* iron, not something cheap. A good iron should have a soleplate that heats evenly and will ideally give you powerful bursts of steam. I have a Rowenta Effective Cord Reel...

    Vintage Manicures

Of course. You just don't want an orangey red. I have a pink-based red lipstick (MAC's Glam) that works well and is fine with the normal blue-based red polish I usually wear. Somewhere around here is a picture of me in a pale pink dress with red lips and nails. EDIT: photos found! Sorry for...

    Vintage Manicures

Take a look around the beauty forum. There are several threads on nail polish and vintage manicures. You can use a plain pink polish - there were lots of colors other than red that gals wore back then. What wasn't around was the French manicure. Many ladies like to match their polish and...

There's a whole Beauty forum here, with lots of sub-threads underneath on a huge variety of topics. To answer to one of the issues you have with your hair - slightly thin hair - the answer is LAYERS! Layers really help give thin hair some body. If you have a slight wave to your hair...

New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

Welcome, Katherine! Everyone here is familiar with your company and I believe there's a Whirlingturban thread over in the Powder Room. Careful about plugging your company in threads here, though. There are pretty strict rules here about that. Check out the beauty forum! You'll probably find...

    Before and After?

I would love to see "before" pics of you gals in your natural hair with no setting or styling, and then "after" pics after styling. Mostly, this is interesting as a way to see how everyone has their hair cut, especially for newer gals interested in vintage styling who want to start with their...

How to get rid of silverfish?

Short answer: Yes! Long answer (from Wikipedia): The favorite food of silverfish is any matter that contains starch or polysaccharides, such as dextrin in adhesives. These include glue, book bindings, paper, photos, sugar, hair, and dandruff. Silverfish can also cause damage to books...

    Ruining vintage stuff :(

I just soaked a 50s skirt for 24 hours in Oxyclean. While the skirt came out fine, it completely destroyed the button on the waistband! It was a colored button made of what I assumed was some type of plastic, didn't look painted at all. Completely stripped all the color and when it came out of...

    foam rollers vs velcro rollers?

Basic cut with long layers. I don't specify exactly how long I want the layers - I just let my stylist do it. I think any stylist worth their salt should know what to do if I tell them "I like to do vintage styles and need long layers in my hair." If I were a stylist I'd want to punch someone in...

I usually get a really nice, tight curl that I brush out to varying degrees based on what I want. These were all done with these rollers:

    foam rollers vs velcro rollers?

I like these pillow rollers better. As I said, you can link them together for body, and they'll also hold larger sections of hair.

Interesting vintage pin curl and waving tools

I used to have a Pro-Curler and it sucked. Too awkward and hard to use, makes the curls too small.

    Those flared 60's coats

As someone else noted, they're just difficult to wear, along with large capes and huge stoles. I have this fantastic alpaca cape-type thing from Peru that I adore, but it's just so hard to wear! In any case, the point I'm trying to make is that not ALL ponchos are bad. Something like this...
