I concur about the straight-on-your-head thing. I have a similarly-shaped hat and I'm pretty sure that's how they would have been most fashionably worn in the 50s. I know that when I place it back on my head it doesn't look right - the crown is too shallow - but you could probably wear it tilted...
I just posted about Butterick Retro B5708 on my blog.
I'm hopefully finishing it tomorrow and will have pics up soon, as well as of the 1959 blouse and 1963 sundress I recently finished- my first ever projects!
Howdy folks,
I'm finally (hopefully) maintaining a regular, interesting (!) blog! Beginning with my long overdue update and a bit of an overhaul . Please do check it out, and follow, I promise things are going to be more interesting from now on! :p and now, with sewing!
I also hope to be...
This is quite wonderful, LizzieMaine.
and probably speaks more to the reality of most womens' lives than the poised, glamorous June Cleaver ideal that even the history books seem to insist upon.
Sizing up a pattern in certain areas ONLY
I have a question, and I've only been confused by the info/diagrams/photos I've found so far, though it seems simple...
all the vintage patterns I've bought are to fit my bust size (36in). However, they normally state that the waist is 28 and the hip...
sheeplady, I am so sorry for the late response! (I always find once school gets into swing I end up having to abandon the board :( )
your advice sounds very good, though you might be pleased to hear I ended up going for a pattern (or three)
I can't wait to make these! They are *exactly* the...
How funny, I had been pondering just the same question, now that warmer weather is upon us!
I agree with the responses, especially the part about it balancing your outfit- all my berets are wool and I would not wear them with, for instance, a light cotton day dress or a circle skirt and...
Hi guys!
I have a question. I have never sewn anything before and for my first project I wanted to make a 50s/60s style blouse/shell top. Very, very basic - at least to my eye. Sleeveless, no collar, box shape with buttons in the back. Hopefully you know what I mean. I have a few vintage...
The PowderKeg, I feel you on that one! I too have an 11 inch difference between waist and hip (which sounds great were it not for the fact that I am a B cup with tiny shoulders), and pencil skirts/high waisted pants are THE hardest thing to buy, vintage or modern. Now that I buy pretty much...
Swinggal, I found some really interesting stuff on your blog/website! Normally the 40s is as far back as my own personal interest goes but great to read about 20s and 30s makeup and hair styling techniques. Love love love that bathing suit post too!
I'm sure thhis was mentioned before, but just to point out, perming will NOT give you the same look as curling your hair. You'll still need to set it, so it won't save you time in that respect.
Black Dahlia, I loved your lucite post- found it really informative and interesting. Is there any way I can follow your blog without getting every new post sent to my email in box, do you know?
Thank you for the compliment on my dress btw! Can't wait to get it!
Latest post: Etsy woes... a bit...
I recently bought a dress from Etsy that was described as 'ice pink', which I now know was seller-speak for 'faded half pink and half white. It's not awful (and I paid $18 for this vintage 50s dress), but if I hold some parts of it up to other parts they are a completely different color...
Ms Williams, your pixie cut is stunning on you- you pull it off impeccably! I do understand that it might be limiting, though. I had my hair cut short a few months back - from almost shoulder length to two or three inches long! - and for the first month I was almost in tears trying to get it to...
