Thanks ladies! I'll have to check out those suggestions. I was thinking that perhaps a high-end dept. store like Nordstom might carry them, too. Thanks!
His Girl Friday. One would think it impossible to dislike a Cary Grant movie, one about reporters to boot - and one is that is regularly raved about. Rosalind Russell's nonstop chatter grated on my nerves. It just didn't "take" for me. [huh]
Also, put me down on the not adoring Casablanca...
This is the story of my life. :eusa_doh: I find it *very* difficult to find low-heeled, cute, dressy shoes that aren't MJ's. Why do all the cute shoes have super-high heels?
Ladies, any suggestions on where to buy *non-seamed* stockings? (Not thigh-highs, with the sticky strips!) I know this is the seamed stockings thread, but I thought this was the best spot.
I bought a pair from Sears, but their "nude" is anything but - they're more "fake suntan with sparkly...
These "Jadore" Mary Janes from Naturalizer are cute, with a 1 1/2" heel:

I own the Naturalizer "Daybreak" - love them! They're comfy as heels go; the site says they're 2 1/4", but I think they're a little...
The above is what I've heard, as well. The pattern companies are concerned with selling patterns; they don't care who makes the garment. You should be fine just making things for a few friends.
BTW, that *is* a cute jumper, maggiethespy! :)
Offhand, I'd suggest watching a few Deanna Durbin movies from the '30s and early '40s to see what she (and the extras!) are wearing. I believe she was around 15 in 1936, when she made Three Smart Girls, and she's definitely a *girl* in that one, not grown up at all. By 1941, in It Started With...
Viola, a skirt in purple sounds great. Wearing colors you love but "can't wear" as skirts or pants is the solution, IMHO. :) I have a grey skirt that I love, but I doubt the color would look good near my face.
I think one of biggest problems in picking colors - especially from a "season"...
I beg to differ! I wear a yellow cardigan sweater with a black skirt (well, black with white florals) all the time. I think the contrast is a little striking if you wear solid black with solid yellow; a little print or texture difference couldn't hurt. But yes, you *can* wear black with...
Thanks for the information, ladies! (And to BeBopBaby, for asking the question. :)) I bought an old sewing box full of stuff at a thrift store, and inside was a package of Irish linen napkins that you hem yourself. I'd like to hem them, but a few have yellowed spots, and they seem awfully...
Next time just use the witch hazel. ;)
Don't wash the area too much; I've done that and it just irritates the skin further. Leave it be, add a little moisturizer, and it'll return to normal.
Good commentary, overall. I don't think the author was trying to squash individualism; rather, for those who want to get a job or keep the one they've got...
Employers don't want to hire people who consider themselves The Most Important Person on the Planet. Overly casual (and more...
True. Blue denim has become a neutral in its own right; people combine all sorts of colors and styles with jeans that they'd never dream of pairing with a pair of solid "denim blue"-colored trousers.
chanteuseCarey, that '40s flower hat is gorgeous. Well, they all are, but that one's just perfect for spring. :)
(Wow, it's been a long time since I posted here! Hello overtime and goodbye FL, I guess!)
I happen to have Edith Head's book The Dress Doctor handy. :) She has a whole section on what to wear for different occasions. Under "Amusement Parks":
Spectator sport clothes - skirt + sweater or blouse, or sport dress (ed. - clearly she wasn't going on any roller coasters!!), sport suit...
I use "Ms." if I'm unsure; if the other person wants to correct me, that's fine. Though I dislike the harsh "zzz" sound at the end of "Ms.", if you say it quickly and softly, it doesn't sound so bad. But in all honesty, I don't use formal titles much anyway. :whistling
The main trouble is...
Different people need different types of learning environments; I can see co-ed being good for some, and not so good for others. It really just depends. But that's why we have different types of private schools. :)
BTW, some majors end up being almost exclusively same-sex by default. Take...
Oh yes, art classes. :) I think I tried to wear a long-sleeved white blouse to an art class. Once. Or maybe twice...maybe that's why I had all those interesting colors on the lower sleeve... :eusa_doh:
I'm working at a short-term job, and on each of the first two Fridays, people said, "Oh...
