Wow, Adele and Audrey Horne - those outfits are gorgeous! Sorry you didn't get them. :(
I love the fact that the godet/pleat on the blue dress matches the bodice fabric. I'm so saving these pictures. :)
I just picked up some McCall's Needlework magazines (which have a lot of knitwear fashion spreads, believe it or not!), and in the 1954 Spring/Summer issue there's an ad for Kelpidine Chewing Gum. Chewing it was supposed to help you lose up to 5 lbs. a week, but it doesn't say how it worked...
I'm with Lady Day - I think it's rude. If I'm going to buy a pattern, I want to see how it goes together. Frequently, the appeal of a pattern lies in a tiny difference in flare, grainline, or shaping. I need to know what I'm buying; the sketch doesn't always tell the whole story. You're...
I was watching a few recently that just went sky-high for what they were - and then others that got no bids at all! It's weird.
Then again, there are designers, and people who collect patterns for the illustrations. And don't rule out costumers, either.
Turning down cold, hard cash because they wanted a credit card?! Nutty.
I don't even have a credit card at this point, so I really hate the way CC's are tied into everything. Hopefully credit ratings will become a thing of the past. I probably have an atrocious credit score, simply because...
True, true. Anyway, the simplest solution is to pay cash. I prefer to pay cash at thrift shops anyway, partly because the charity doesn't get dinged for a credit card processing fee.
I bought these recently, only in black (the older style that's on clearance right now). They're very cute in person. Entirely synthetic materials, if that bothers you, but graceful lines.
I love the themed Vanity Fair spreads, too. Unfortunately, they always seem a little bit too posed for my tastes...but there's high fashion for you. :)
The right red could work. I have a sheer, berry-red lipstick that I used to wear with jewel-toned purple tops. (I say "used to wear" because those tops don't fit anymore!) It's Neutrogena's Moisture Sheer in "Ruby Bliss".
Only thing I can find is a song called "Rose O'Day (The Filla-Da-Gusha Song)" which seems to have ranked high on the charts for 1942, sung by both Freddy Martin and Kate Smith. Lyrics here. And Gracie Fields sings it in this YouTube clip.
Caveat: I've been in court all of once, and I didn't end up as a juror, so my experience is minimal. :) I believe the dress instructions were "business casual", or something along those lines. I wore a skirt, slightly dressy knit top, and black knit blazer-style jacket (it looked better than...
That's the hardest thing for me to resist: a bargain. The largest "collection" I have right now seems to be my fabric stash, and it's a doozy. Most of it was purchased because it was a "great deal". I just need to take a bunch of it to the thrift store before I talk myself out of it: "Well...
Edited. Poor reviews of the repro pattern are making me not look for it anymore. But if you have a *vintage* copy of this pattern, I'm still interested. :)
SayCiCi's advice is good. You want colors that coordinate with each other. Brown would work with all three hat colors. I would suggest only matching three of the accessories, at the most, but matching gloves + purse + shoes sounds a bit much. Let's say you have brown gloves and brown shoes...
Love this pattern! And the lady on the left has a hat matching the other's dress. :)
ETA: Wait, maybe I'm wrong. Is that supposed to be a real flower on her head?
Tape measures tend to stretch out - we pull on them (at least I do), and the measurements shift. Since there's a little variation in everything, you might have a time finding an *exact* match.
Me, I use a flexible, clear gridded ruler like this. You can find them at hobby/art supply stores...
