I'm in my 20s, and hardly feel like a ma'am. But I've heard it several times recently, along with "miss", from retail people. Maybe everyone's become more polite as a result of the recession? :)
/\ lol lol
Methinks the author of this article has been misinformed.
If I could get over the fact that I wore a *real* snood back in 1992, I could probably wear one today. But these things? Seems like they'd slip right off your head and leave your hair looking all messy. (Snarf hair?)...
Good article. I'd also argue that the shape of the vamp is even more important than the height. I have a pair of pumps with a fantastic curve to the vamp that helps my legs look elongated, even though the vamp isn't incredibly low.
There are threads about vintage sizing around here, but I couldn't find much information for the petite ladies of the lounge! I thought it would be nice to have a thread with petite-specific tips and vintage resources.
Strictly speaking, I'm not really petite. I'm what I would call an...
I had to go peek in the mirror after reading this, to see where I placed mine. :) Mine is slightly center of my eyebrow arch; if I placed it any further to the left, it would look weird. So you may have to play with placement to see what works for you and the way your hair grows.
Can you post photos of your hair? It might be tougher for an individual with curly hair to acquire a sharp part without a decent amount of hair product and some time.
I have fine, slightly wavy hair (though I have lots of it); side parts aren't really an issue for me. I've been wearing it...
I'd second the suggestion to take it into a sewing machine repair shop. Older machines tend to be very durable, and will last for years if properly cared for. At the least, the technicians should be able to take a look and see if it's something that can be repaired inexpensively.
I hate to...
Lady Day, Thai Silks sells a 52-48 silk/cotton blend satin, though only in black and white:

Also, they have a 60-40 cotton/silk sateen, and that comes...
Mysterious Mose, thanks for the hat pictures! Neat stuff. Do you have dates on those? The last scan in particular looks very Edwardian or Victorian.
Oh boy. I know what I'll be looking up at the library. :)
I just took off a pair of these. :) They're quite comfy! My only beef is that they're entirely synthetic, but otherwise they seem nice, with good arch support. (I've only worn them a couple times, so I can't offer a thorough review!) I'm using them as dance shoes, but they'd be great for...
If possible, these look even cuter in person. I saw them on my last trip to Macy's. Unfortunately, the price wasn't right for an impulse buy. :eusa_doh:
1/2" is fine; I'm not sure why the standard changed to 5/8", but it's not necessarily better. Some would argue that it is, in fact, worse to have all that excess seam allowance to trim and press flat. Some things, like collars, are way easier to sew with 3/8" seam allowances.
I like the way...
Did somebody say Perry Mason books? :cheers1:
The Paul Drake of the books wasn't supposed to be dressed nearly as sharply as William Hopper's Drake. He was supposed to look like the boring, sober-faced everyman you'd stare right past in a public setting.
But film lends itself to flash...
Ya beat me to it. :) There are some vintage styles - particularly certain prints - that I (as a 20-something) do not intend to wear because they'd probably give off the vibe of hand-me-downs from the '80s-'90s. I feel I tend to look extra young in such clothes - like I never developed my own...
I've always been partial to the over-the-top, Hollywood-does-Ancient-Egypt costumes by (who else?) Edith Head for The Ten Commandments.
I couldn't find a screenshot, but Nefretiri's final gown is splendid, if less glitzy: deep navy blue, with a striking drape of gold-edged red silk.
