    Before and After?

Gingerella, my hair isn't thin, but it's very fine. I haven't actually tried a proper pincurl yet, but I've had some luck with pillow rollers. I'm still in the "brand new beginner" stage, but they're pretty easy to use, and you just twist the ends together to hold the hair. I also have those...

    Retro=Frumpy?

Kamikat, judging by all the photos I've seen of you here, you do *not* dress frumpy! Actually, I've been impressed by your well-fitted clothes. To me, frumpy means ill-fitting and unflattering, neither of which apply to you. Now, I'm sure you may have one or two outfits that aren't 100%...

    1940's ponytails?

I've noticed low ponytails in films from the '40s. IIRC, it was usually curled (often curled under, like a smooth pageboy style), and pulled back with a barette or a ribbon. Whether they used a hair elastic underneath or not, I have no idea. As an example, in The Uninvited (1944), Gail...

    Nicotine stains

I'm in the same boat, though my culprit is caffeine and spicy foods, not smoking. I'm definitely going to try the peroxide tip! I've used over-the-counter whitening gels before, but you have to avoid the stain-causing foods for several days after using them...and I never do. :eusa_doh:

    Storage and care...

Great storage space, KittyT! This thread reminds me that I really should buy some garment bags for my wool items, and more cedar blocks to put in my closet. I recently tried to put (some) order to my ever-growing vintage collection, and bought a bunch of decorative boxes to make everything...

    Toyota Retro Commercials

Neat commercial. If I chose a car based strictly on the advertising, I think that train ad would make me want an Avalon!

    My smashing success

Oh no! lol Someone I know recently smashed a fancy teacup (not particularly old, but with sentimental value), and I suggested saving the pieces. I figure we can come up with a way to incorporate them into a decorative object. Apparently there are people who intentionally break old...

Ok my husband made fun of my make up....

Your makeup looks very nice to me! :) Maybe he's just not used to it. About your skin being dry - did you use moisturizer beneath the foundation? (It looks like you have nice skin, so you may find that you don't even need lots of foundation to get the "look", just your tinted moisturizer...

    A warning to fellow thrifters

Better yet, get a tape measure keychain, like this. Absolutely indispensable.

    The 1950s: The gateway era.

Like Lauren, I was initially attracted to historical costume, and worked my way up from there, but I've also had a long-standing interest in the WWII period. So my first yearnings for vintage were more influenced by the films of the late '30s-'40s than by the 50s/pinup/rockabilly look. But...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

I try to remember to wipe off the underside of the free-arm before I sew, because I over-oiled the machine once, and some oil always seems to escape. Maybe use a rag with a little cleaner or rubbing alcohol, to make sure there's no oil slick before you start sewing? And definitely keep a rag...

Miss, Mrs. or Madam? The demise of Ms?

I've never thought about it in just that way, but that's spot-on. I'd feel very awkward calling a woman 30 years older than me "Miss" So-and-so! Maybe if I lived in another time or place, it would be normal, but in modern society it just sounds odd.

What is your favorite red lipstick brand/shade?

I've been keeping an eye out for a good, long-lasting lipstick, and when I found a two-for-one deal for Revlon's ColorStay, I figured I'd give their "Top Tomato" shade a try. Maybe I'm not used to long-lasting lipsticks, but I wasn't very impressed. The *good* is that it's more blue-based...

    Do You Dress For Dinner?

As an unemployed stuent, I don't really switch my outfits throughout the day, except to change out of my more beat-up outfits if I'm going "out" (school, shopping, etc.). When I worked, I usually swapped my work clothes for comfier, at-home clothes so the work clothes would stay nice. I don't...

Iconic Trenchcoat wear for women...(Comments Welcome)

Catarina, I have a similar problem; I'm not short, but I have very narrow shoulders, so lots of coats are too wide for me. Sometimes petite vintage styles from the '70s show up on Ebay or Etsy, so keep looking! The nice thing about a lot of '70s styles is that they're fitted with princess...

Mistakes You've Made with Vintage Clothes.

Washing vintage rayon Washed a vintage rayon dress, instead of just taking it in to be dry cleaned. BIG mistake. It shrunk at least a couple of inches (and this in cold water), and all the hanging and trying to pull it back into shape didn't make much difference. It would have been less dumb...

Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Last week, one of the ladies in my swing dance class looked at me when I came in and said something to the effect of, "You always dress so neat and nice - you really look great!" or something to that effect. It made my night, since that week had not been a good one! I don't really dress...

    Sewing Scraps

Have hats been suggested yet? Scraps under 1 yd. can work for hats, especially tiny ones. I'm making a pillbox hat from an approximately 22"x12" piece of felted wool. (At least, I'm gonna try. ;))

1930's/40's Christmas - help with script

Re: the hanging lightbulb, my grandfather moved to CA roughly around 1940, and his tiny home had *one* hanging lightbulb. All the kids were enthralled! His family was definitely lower-income, and I don't think they had electric light when they lived further East, though I don't think they...

    Favorite Non Red Lipstick Shades

You might try Clinique's Almost Lipstick in "Black Honey". I've become accustomed to more color on my lips, but it's great for that just-a-hint-of-berry look. It looks dark purple in the tube, but it's very sheer - but not glossy & goopy - when you put it on. If I want something brighter...
