I object to the idea that giving a wedding gift to a couple obligates them to reciprocate in any way, including throwing a party. A gift is only a gift if there aren't strings attached, and wedding gifts should be given solely because one wishes the new couple well in their new life together...- Orgetorix

In some parts of the US, where wedding receptions are a huge deal, this is quite common. I think it's deplorable, and insulting to the people getting married. I won a horribly listed suit a couple of weeks ago for just a few bucks, to take a chance. It turned out to be a bust (100% polyester, straight outta the 1970s), so I contacted the person I outbid and sold it to him for what he bid on it. -
